HP F4850
macOS 10.13 High Sierra

While I cannot say this HP F4850 inkjet printer ever worked very well, for many years, I have been able to print, usually from a pdf, on the top half of a standard sheet of paper by setting a custom size (8.5" x 5.5").

Since updating High Sierra to 10.13.6, I have been unable to do this. The printer window says "Paper Size Error", then the "'Filter' Failed" error and stops sending the file to the HP F4580.

The HP F4580 was able to do this printing before the Mac OS update.

This was happening with ALL paper sizes since the High Sierra update. I've been resetting and rebooting over and over, and downloading and installing one printer driver update after another from HP and Apple until, hallelujah, yesterday the printer finally got the message and printed the image in the middle of a standard sheet of paper.

(As I posted elsewhere, "Tried all Apple advice, nothing worked. Per advice on HP forum, I uninstalled all HP printer software and reinstalled the latest package of drivers (HPPrinterDrivers5.1.dmg).

Links to both the HP uninstaller and HPPrinterDrivers5.1.dmg package of drivers are on the HP forums here:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/Driver-Package-Deskjet-F4580-3-3-2-for-... )

However, I still can't print to custom paper sizes without the "Paper Size Error", then the "'Filter' Failed" error.

What can I do to get this straightened out? I don't print to custom paper sizes often, but when I do, I want to be able to get the job done without wasting a full sheet of paper. (Save a tree, you know?)

@crabpaws, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand you are not able to print from your Mac due to an error.

This printer is not AirPrint compatible and has no printer driver available on the HP Support site to work on macOS 10.13 due to its age.

This printer does not support the HP Smart app too on a Mac.

For more info on this issue, refer to this document.

However, Gutenprint (formerly called Gimp-Print) provides open-source basic print drivers for many printers that would otherwise not be supported in Mac OS X. To see if your printer is supported, go to Gutenprint drivers for more information.

NOTE: Gutenprint drivers are not supported by HP or Apple.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
