I have a 9010e printer. I replaced the black cartridge and now I am getting a message that there is a carriage jam and that the carriage cannot move. I have tried the online advice for fixing this: making sure there is no paper jam or obstruction; turning off the printer and my computer, unplugging the printer, and then turning everything on again. Nothing is correcting the problem. The carriage is immobile on the right side and won't budge. Any advice?

@whittisl, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Since you’ve already done the basics (cleared obstructions, rebooted everything), and the carriage is stuck on the right side, let’s try a few deeper steps to resolve this:
Unplug & Manually Move the Carriage
- With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back (this disables the motor lock on the carriage).
- Open the printer's access door fully.
- Gently try sliding the carriage to the center. Don’t force it — if it doesn’t move.
- Check if any packaging material or loose debris (even dried ink or tiny paper bits) is in the right carriage parking area.
Tip: Use a flashlight to check for:
- Bits of paper behind the carriage.
- Ink buildup or sticky rollers on the right side rail.
Check Ink Cartridge Seating
- Remove all cartridges.
- Reinstall them one at a time, starting with the black cartridge.
- Make sure each clicks firmly in place — sometimes after a replacement, one can be misaligned and block movement.
Check the Carriage Belt & Encoder Strip
While the printer is off and open, inspect:
- The thin transparent plastic strip behind the carriage (encoder strip) — gently clean it with a lint-free cloth if it looks dirty.
- The rubber belt that moves the carriage — see if it looks dislodged or has slack.
Power Reset With Door Open
This sounds odd but works in some cases:
- With the carriage access door still open, plug the printer back in.
- Wait — the printer might try to reset and move the carriage.
- If it does, let it finish, then close the door.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I'm afraid none of that helped. The problem is the carriage is immobile on the far right of the interior. I cannot get access to the ink cartridges to remove them, so I was not able to do your suggestions about those. This happened after I replaced the black cartridge with a new one HP had sent me. I believe I installed it correctly and clicked it into place. Do you have any other suggestions?
