Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My Deskjet 5150 suddenly stopped printing reds. When I do a test page, all colors show up except Red, and the characters are otherwise nice, dark, and crisp.

Hi @DJ36,

Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I understand you are having issues while printing. Don't worry I'll do my best to help you with this.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Did you replace the cartridge recently?

Have you tried to clean the ink cartridge contacts as well as the rollers?

Are you able to make a copy from the printer?

Have you tried to use another ink cartridge?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Let’s first try and make a “photocopy” to determine whether the issue is with the printer or not. Place a document on the scanner glass and choose “Copy” option. If the printer is making a good copy, then the printer hardware is fine.

If the issue persists, I would suggest you could try to use a old ink cartridge or a different ink cartridge and check if that works. If nothing works, I would personally suggest this could be a possible hardware failure. I would recommend you contact our HP phone support for further assistance.

I have a related problem, but I believe it is due to the instant ink cartridge as which I have not received a new one since 2015.  I believe the printer lies on how much ink is left.  If I check via the printer display/buttons, it shows good levels (50%) .  If I use the HP computer utility to show what is printing and ink levels, it communicates to the printer then displays a full (large) black ink cartridge but no color cartridge even though the printer will print other colors than red.

I have tried all the HP diagnostics and troubleshooting pages I have found on this issue including installing all updates, cleaning cartridge, cleaning contacts, 2nd level cleaning cartridge, removing and setting cartridge on side (and upside down and right side up) for 24 hours, resets, hard resets (complete power/connection removals and bleed/drain power) and still cannot print red.  I can fix it temporarily by this series:  printing quality diagnostic page, align ink cartridges, cleaning cartridge, cleaning 2nd level.  If I leave out a step it does not work and if it sits longer than an hour, I have to repeat the series.
