Microsoft Windows 11

I keep my printer off because as soon as I turn it on, it starts printing pages of unsolicited ads.

Where is this material coming from?  Nothing shows up as “spooling,” etc.  There are no print jobs showing, up so canceling is not an option.  I think this printer is heading to the dumpster.

Welcome to the HP English Community --

The source of the problem is not the printer -- it knows nothing of what it is asked to print.

Check whether you have inadvertently opened the printer's security to allow anyone outside of your personal network to access and use the printer.

Weak (or missing) Network security is a common culprit when devices (like your printer) are being accessed (used) by those you do not know and do not want using your tech (computer, phone, printer).

NOTE:

If you are using ePrint, consider checking the "allowed senders" list and perhaps changing the printer's ePrint email address to prevent unauthorized access to the printer.

That said,

The printer is an older model -- newer devices are generally inherently better protected even should your network security setup be less than ideal.
