My HP Envy 4520 has stopped printing in Magenta. The yellow/Cyan are working fine, but Magenta will not work. I have already tried cleaning the cartridges (both through the tools on the printer and manually with a swab), Have reinstalled drivers, and done all things recommended on the HP site. I am also an Instant Ink customer and this is one of the cartridges sent directly by HP. I have wasted so many pages trying to fix this.

There is no seperate Magenta - its a tri clour cartridge I have replaced this and ran printhead clean and seems to be resolved.
I've just relaised that my printer is nearly 8 years old (and has reached the end of its support life, no service is available for product.) so probably due replacement = any suggestions for replacemnt?

Hi @CharlieHo,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP ENVY 4520 is not printing in magenta despite trying the recommended steps, including cleaning the cartridges and reinstalling the drivers, here's what you can do next to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
1. Verify Ink Levels
- Check the ink levels on the printer or in the HP Smart app.
- If the magenta cartridge is low or empty, request a replacement from HP Instant Ink.
2. Perform a Printhead Cleaning (Deep Cleaning)
- Run the Deep Clean option (if available) from the printer's settings menu.
- Access this via:
- Printer Control Panel: Tools > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
- HP Smart App: Use the maintenance tools under Settings.
3. Align the Printhead
- After cleaning, perform a printhead alignment:
- From the printer menu, navigate to Tools > Align Printer.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and inspect the alignment page to verify if magenta is printed correctly.
4. Inspect the Cartridge and Printhead Contacts
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Remove the magenta cartridge.
- Inspect the copper contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer:
- If dirty, clean them gently using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.
- Let them dry and reinstall the cartridge.
5. Test With Another Cartridge
- If you have a spare magenta cartridge (even a partially used one), try replacing it to rule out a defective cartridge.
- If the spare works, the issue likely lies with the magenta cartridge. Contact HP Instant Ink for a free replacement.
6. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure your printer firmware is up to date. Use the HP Smart app or visit HP's driver and firmware page for the latest updates.
- Firmware updates often resolve compatibility or performance issues with cartridges.
7. Run a Print Quality Diagnostic Report
- From the printer's control panel: Tools > Print Quality Report.
- Examine the report for any magenta ink inconsistencies.
- If magenta is missing entirely, it may indicate a hardware issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
