My printer is unable to print from my desktop. It is connected to the same network by cable. The laptops in the house work well using wi-fi. HP Smart sees the printer and says it is online. Scanning works.

MS Word sees the printer and says it is online. Once I choose "print" I get an error message says printer in error

"Status. error 1 document waiting.

Type Microsoft IPP Class Driver

Comment HP Color Laserjet MFP M281 fdw"

This has been going on for weeks now and I have resorted to using a USB stick to transfer files for printing. Dell have been through the desktop settings but cannot find anything wrong. An indication of what is going on would be really helpful.

It will not print from a WiFi connection on the desktop either.

thanks for your help.

Based on the info it would appear that you are connected using a WSD port. These types of ports are notorious for being unreliable in maintaining communication.  As you state that you are wired to a network I suggest that you change the port type on driver to a Standard TCP/IP port. This KB article should give you an idea of how to setup a TCP/P port. https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printers-Knowledge-Base/How-to-manually-install-a-network-printer-in-W...

You should also be using an HP driver not the Microsoft IPP driver. The IPP driver will only provide basic printing support and in most cases you will not get all features of the printer to work. The HP Universal Printer Driver is a good choice.

Many thanks for your reply and the step by step approach.

Before I embark on the solution you have proposed, I just wanted to be sure that I have been clear with my problem.

I have been using HP Smart and this hasn't worked. Initially it would not see the printer. After using the HP Doctor it does see the printer but would still not print even with the VPN turned off, as recommended by Dell. It did scan once before stopping!

I have reverted to a direct USB connection to the printer from my desktop. This works both for printing and scanning but clearly defeats the purpose of a network connection.

Unfortunately, this has screwed up the wireless connection and the error message that appeared on the desktop, now appears on the laptop.

I will implement the driver installation that you suggest and I hope this will fix the problem.

Many thanks for taking the time to propose a solution.
