Hi @Grandmaof16,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP 6400 series printer is flashing a message indicating that the tray is open when it is securely closed, and it's preventing the printer from operating, you can try the following troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:

1. Check for Obstructions

  • Inspect the Tray: Open the tray and check for any obstructions or debris that might be preventing it from closing properly.
  • Paper Alignment: Ensure that the paper is properly aligned and not overfilled, which could cause the tray to not close correctly.

2. Reset the Printer

  • Power Cycle: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 60 seconds before plugging it back in and turning it on.

3. Inspect the Tray Sensors

  • Clean the Sensors: Look for any sensors around the tray area. These sensors detect whether the tray is open or closed. Gently clean them with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Check for Damage: Inspect the sensors and tray for any visible damage that might be causing the issue.

4. Check the Tray Mechanism

  • Re-seat the Tray: Remove the tray completely and reinsert it, ensuring it slides in smoothly and clicks into place securely.
  • Check for Alignment Issues: Make sure the tray is aligned correctly with the guides and slots.

5. Update Printer Firmware

  • Firmware Update: Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates can fix bugs related to hardware detection.
    • Visit HP Software and Driver Downloads and enter your printer model to find the latest firmware update.

6. Factory Reset the Printer

  • Factory Reset: Perform a factory reset on your printer to clear any software glitches.
    • Go to the printer’s control panel, navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults. Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
