HP Officejet 5740
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Since I changed modems when trying to print, the computer says the printer is connected and ready. When I hit the print icon, it then says "error" and the intended document remains in the que.

Sometimes when I reboot the computer or the printer, the printer (unbidden) completes printing whatever  is in the que.

I followed the instructions about rebooting the the printer and modem and then my computer without success.

Any ideas?

Welcome to HP Forums @SteveGN,

Thanks for the post.

I understand that you are facing an issue with the printer responding intermittently, is that right?

Kudos to you for trying to troubleshoot the issue on your own.

Not to worry, I will be glad to assist you.

Are you using a dual band router? (Please connect the printer to the 2.4Ghz network)

Assigning a manual IP Address to your printer should resolve the issue you are facing.

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer (which can found by pressing the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel)
  • Enter the IP address on the web browser (Ex: chrome, IE) to enter the printer EWS page.
  • Go to the “Network” tab, click on “Wireless (802.11) then click on “Network address (IPV4)
  • Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
  • Click on the radio button which says “Manual DNS server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)

Let me know if this helped.
