HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My OS is 19045.5011.

It prints in grayscale but will not print in color.  An advanced test page printed in color.  Cartridge shows full.  I've double checked all settings.  All set to color.  It simply won't print color.

Hi @Sandy338

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with printer not printing in color, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today. Let’s go through a few steps to help you troubleshoot the problem.

1. Check the Printer Settings

Default Printer Settings:

  • Windows 10: Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  • Select your HP ENVY 4520, then click Manage > Printing Preferences.
  • Ensure that under the Paper/Quality tab, Color is selected and not set to Grayscale or Black & White.
  • In some cases, there might also be a setting called Color Options; ensure that it is set to Color and not Black & White.

Print Dialogue Settings:

  • When you go to print a document, ensure that in the Print Dialog Box that appears, you check that color printing is selected. Sometimes, the program you’re printing from may override the default printer settings.

2. Check for Software Interference or Print Spooler Issues

Clear the Print Queue: Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click your printer, and click See what's printing. If there are any print jobs, cancel them.

Update Printer Driver: Even if you’ve already installed the latest drivers, there could be a newer update or a corrupted installation:

  • Visit HP Support and download the latest drivers for your HP ENVY 4520 printer. Click here

3. Check the Ink Cartridges and Print Head

Ensure Proper Cartridge Installation: Double-check that the cartridges are installed correctly and fully seated.

Check the Print Head: If you haven't already, try performing a cleaning cycle for the print head. This can help clear any clogs that might be preventing the color ink from flowing properly.

  • Go to the printer's Control Panel (on the printer itself), and look for the Tools or Settings section. Look for an option to clean print heads or align printer.

Test Color Cartridges: Even though the cartridges show as full, sometimes there can be a malfunction in the ink flow. You can try removing the cartridges, gently wiping the copper contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth, and re-inserting them to see if that helps.

4. Reset the Printer to Factory Settings

If all else fails, performing a factory reset may help clear any internal settings that are preventing color printing:

  • From the Control Panel on your printer, look for a Restore Defaults or Factory Reset option in the Settings or Tools section.
  • This will reset all settings to default, so be prepared to reconfigure your preferences afterward.
