Product: LaserJet Pro MFP M426fdw
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I print something and, periodically after printing if the machine is left on, it will print about 1/2 a line of oddball symbols and characters in the upper left of a page and then put it in the outbox. I have tried reloading the software and using the troubleshooting provided by HP online. No good. I am not a techie, so keep the responses as basic as possible. Don't assume knowledge. Thanks.

That sounds like a driver issue. 
Reinstall your printer using the HP original driver package - https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL61846/ma-149294-9/HP_LJ_Pro_MFP_M426f-M427f-PCL6_v3_Win...

Just a electronics enthusiast trying to fix everything.
