HP's software is always so disappointing... the MacOS options stop at around 10.x and I have Sonoma 14.x; is the driver software ever updated and tested?  I don't think so.  The firmware updater download goes out to lunch when I try to install it.  The printer webpage monitor can not be displayed.  Printing from an iPhone works fine!  But if you can't install whatever updates HP eventually offers, it doesn't really do a lot of good.

@GregHutchings, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Printing Issues on macOS with HP OfficeJet Pro 9016!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It seems that you're experiencing challenges printing from your Mac running macOS Sonoma 14.x to your HP OfficeJet Pro 9016. Here are steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Ink Levels

  • Even though the message is speculative, checking the actual ink levels may help. You can do this from the printer's control panel or using the HP Smart app on your smartphone.

2. Driver Compatibility

3. AirPrint

  • Since printing from your iPhone works, your printer probably supports AirPrint. You can attempt to configure your Mac to use AirPrint as well, which doesn’t require traditional drivers.
    • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners on your Mac.
    • Add a printer using the “+” button and select your printer from the list. Choose "AirPrint" under the "Use" field if available.

4. Firmware Updates

  • If the firmware updater is not functioning, ensure that all HP programs are up-to-date and your internet connection is stable.

5. Accessing Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  • It may be that your Mac cannot access the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) due to network settings. Ensure your printer's IP address is correctly entered into the browser and matches the one shown on your iPhone or Network Configuration Page.

6. Resetting Printing System

  • Resetting the printing system on your Mac may help to resolve underlying issues.
    • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    • Right-click (or Ctrl-click) on the printers list and select Reset Printing System....
    • This will remove all printers and queues from your system. Add your printer again afterward.

7. Software Update

  • Regularly check for macOS and application updates. Sometimes updates from Apple resolve compatibility issues with third-party software.

8. HP Smart App

  • Consider using the HP Smart app for Mac which can sometimes streamline driver updates and printer configuration.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
