Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My Office Jet Pro 8720 is no longer supported but had been working just fine for reasonably higher volume printing.  The touch screen would go dark until a job was sent or I tapped on it. I was trying to send a print job and a window opened on my computer with a request for FAX selection between connecting to a line or a web choice, and then the FAX cover memo form.. I was not attempting to FAX. The touch screen is now showing a green arrow at the FAX icon, and the printer will not accept the print jobs no matter how I tried. To be sure the printer could even work I tried copying a document which it did just fine. It is in terminal FAX mode and will not accept print jobs.  HP indicated that my printer is out of warranty and is no longer supported. I have very limited resources and cannot afford to buy a service plan for a printer they don't support, but I need to make this one last as long as possible. I am hoping someone can help.

Hi @KatherinePrints,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 is stuck in Fax mode, and you're unable to use it for regular printing. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue.

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for about 30 seconds.
  • Plug it back in, turn it on, and see if the issue persists.

Factory Reset:

  • Note: This will erase any custom settings on your printer.
  • On the printer's control panel, touch the right arrow, select "Setup," and then select "Tools."
  • Scroll down and select "Restore Factory Defaults" or a similar option.

Update Firmware:

  • Check if there's a firmware update available for your printer on the HP support website. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve software-related issues.

Disconnect Fax Line:

  • If you're not using the fax function, disconnect any phone lines connected to the fax port on the printer.

Reset Network Settings:

  • On the printer's control panel, touch the right arrow, select "Setup," and then select "Network Setup."
  • Select "Restore Network Defaults" or a similar option.

Remove Print Jobs:

  • On your computer, cancel all print jobs in the print queue related to the printer. Sometimes, a stuck print job can cause issues.

Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  • Uninstall the existing printer drivers on your computer and reinstall them from the official HP website.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, you may need to consider using the printer in standalone mode (copying and scanning) or explore affordable replacement options if printing is essential for your work.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
