Officejet 5258 printer

I have tried twice to replace the ink cartridge with HP cartridges bought from Sam's Club and Office Max and continue to get an error message of "older generation cartridge".

Have you checked the expiry date on the cartridges?

 

Meanwhile, some releases of ink cartridges are not compatible with older versions of printer firmware. Update the firmware to resolve this problem.

 

Follow the steps in the below article to update the printer firmware.
