Officejet 5740
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've tried multiple scenarios of recommended fixes from this forum with no luck. I've tried to print via USB and wireless. The print job does show momentarily in the print queue and appears to go away in the queue as if it prints. When running the doctor the test print doesn't work but the internal print test page does. I've also adjusted the PRINTER folder to be full control for administrator for all users listed.

I tried these steps for instance with no luck:

Thanks for joining the HP Support forums! I would glad to be of your assistance 🙂

I see that your HP Officejet 5740 printer is scanning fine, but have issues while printing from the Windows 10 PC. I would first suggest a clean install to get this issue fixed. Here are the steps:

  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Go to Run again, type “%temp%” and press enter to get the temporary files. Delete all the files here. Skip the items which cannot be deleted.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now click http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/oj5740/OJ5740__Basicx64_1092.exe to install the software.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

If the issue persists, the issue could be with the printer permissions. I would suggest giving administrator permissions as suggested below:

  • Press the "Windows logo key" + "r" to get “Run" - Type "spool" and press ok.
  • Right-click on "PRINTERS" - Select "Properties"
  • Select "Security" tab. You will find few entries like "Administrators" and "users", click on "Edit" and give "Full permission" to all the entries. Save / apply the settings.
  • Go to "Devices and printers", right-click on the new printer that you installed and select "Printer properties".
  • Select "Security" tab. You will find few entries like "Administrators" and "users", click on "Edit" and give "Full permission" to all the entries. Save / apply the settings.
  • Restart your computer and then try to print.

Please let me know if there are other steps i can take!

thanks!

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

Let's try using the Windows built-in driver. Please uninstall the drivers from the Computer and then install the built-in drivers:

Thanks for the suggestion Betty0610, but this didn't work either. Just to let you know, I removed the usb cable from the computer after uninstalling all the previous drivers, etc and only plugged the usb printer cable back in once the computer was rebooted. Once i plugged the usb cable into the computer, it immediately recognized the printer and installed the software and driver. When i attempt to print, it once again shows the document in the queue for a few seconds and goes away as if it prints but nothing happens.

thanks for the help Sandytechy20! After calling them I found out it was a corrupt driver that I don't think i would have ever figured it out. Even if you removed the old drivers and all the %temp% files it wouldn't have fixed it.
