I just puchased this printer this week.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled the print drivers and have cleaned and alligned the print heads.

PDF Readers work approximately in the same way, that is, generally speaking neither Adobe Reader DC nor Foxit provide any kind of precise margin control.  Margins are adjusted in the original file format.  For example, if the original file is in Word format, the fonts, layout, orientation, margins (and gutters) can be adjusted and saved into the Word document.  Open that document in Word > save the document in PDF format.  Margins and gutter settings normally transfer into that newly saved PDF document.  (Applies to recent versions of Office Word.)

If the file cannot be adjusted (no way to shunt into Word and fix, for example), consider using the tools in the PDF Reader software to "fit" the document contents to the page size.

Reinstall / Update your PDF Reader (Adobe Reader DC /Optional  Foxit Reader)

  • HINT: Watch out for and UNCHECK unwanted extra software
  • Adobe Reader DC software should be installed even if you do not open / view / print PDF files directly from the software.

General Example

Manage Print Output with Print Preview_PDF_1DManage Print Output with Print Preview_PDF_1D

Adobe Acrobat Reader Learn & Support

Print as Image

If the file will not print due to unusual content (odd fonts, color schemes, tables, other oddities), print the file as an Image.  Image printing does not require the printer software to translate file content.

Open the offending PDF file in Adobe Reader DC > File > Print > Advanced >>

  1. Set the printer select the colors (Optional)
  2. Print the PDF file as an image

Chrome

IF you were printing from Chrome, it might be necessary that you adjust the margins before submitting the job to the printer.  Chrome might cut off the top of the document if the margins are left as "default".

Click on / off the Chrome "headers and footers" to check the Print Preview - this might affect the output.

Thanks so much for responding to my post!

I have one more question/comment.  If I print the same .pdf file on my other HP printer, none of the document is cut off.  This is why I think its an issue with my new printer.

You are welcome.

You might be right, there may be an issue with the printer - I do not generally say to anyone, "You are wrong."  There may be evidence to support the situation one way or the other, of course.  Remote diagnostics are always subject to perspective and the amount of shared information available.

Printers are made up of two "parts":

  • Software, Drivers, Firmware - and the Operating System / File System, and network to which they are connected.
  • Printer Hardware, that is, the physical device.

In general, HP printers - like other competitive and reliable brands - are not "out of the box" defective.

In general, individual printers (of any brand) respond a bit differently to the same environment.  This is because the printer hardware (what the printer can do physically - Specifications) is influenced by the printer software, drivers, firmware , and other programs and software that interact with the printer.

For example, printers that support Borderless printing do not behave (respond) in the same way that does a printer that does not support this feature.

In general, PDF reader softwares are similar  (Adobe Reader DC /Optional  Foxit Reader)

Sometimes, reinstalling Adobe Reader DC can resolve odd occurrences of issues with PDF printing / viewing.

Occasionally, documents respond differently depending on which PDF Reader software you use.

Driver Settings can impact output.

For example:

Yes, after you have also completed all the tests and troubleshooting, and the printer has failed one of more of the tests, it is possible the printer is the source of the issue.  Even having passed every test, there is always the possibility that something has been missed (or unreported).

References - for those reading

Troubleshooting includes a number of tests to engage the printer hardware and test how it responds to its environment.

Step 10 and beyond - Diagnostics include testing the printer alignment and other print quality setups.

Printing Self-Test Pages

Although the Doctor is not necessarily equipped to deal with the margin "cut-off" problem, the software can (and does) check a variety of setups and settings to help make sure the printer is "sitting well" in its environment.

Assuming the printer has passed the Troubleshooting, then I missed something (quite possible.

I cannot duplicate your issue) and sometimes one or more questions / setups / software installations can impact results.

If the printer fails the diagnostics / tests, you will want to contact Hp Technical Support.
