Hi@Dave55044,

Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!

I see you are experiencing squeaks issues with the HP Officejet Printer.

A grinding sound is heard when the printer is turned on or when it is printing. Blinking lights may accompany the noise. The problem can be caused by a carriage stall or a paper jam. Also, if you hear printer rollers squeaking, you can try a printer roller cleaning.

I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  2. Remove USB cable, if present.
  3. Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  4. Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  5. Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

If you continue facing the issue, then update the printer firmware following the steps in the below article.

The sound issue is usually caused due to any mechanical wear and tear in the printer. If issue persists this could be a possible hardware issue.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I tried unplugging the printer and followed your instructions.   It still squeaks.

I also attempted to update the firmware, but my printer is new and has the latest firmware.

Lastly, I aligned the the printer head to see if that would make a difference.    No luck.

Please send instructions on how to lubricate the rollers.

Hi@Dave55044,

Thank you for responding, I appreciate your time and effort.

Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth. Press the cloth against the rollers and rotate them upwards with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

Get a good quality lubricating oil to lubricate the rollers properly.

  1. After the cleaning is done, take a fresh cloth and add some oil to it.
  2. Next, wipe the entire roller with the oiled cloth. Make sure to cover every part.
  3. Install the rollers and the panel back.
  4. Try to get some test prints.

Cleaning the paper feed rollers

  1. Turn off the all-in-one and unplug the power cord.
  2. Remove the rear access door.
  3. Clean each roller using a clean lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water (distilled water preferred).
  4. Rotate the rollers to clean the entire surface.

Please feel free to contact us here anytime you need any further assistance.

Have a great day!

I don't think the rollers are the problem.   The sound seems to be coming from the rail that holds the print cartridges.

Hi@Dave55044,

Thank you for responding, I appreciate your time and effort.

The encoder strip (the clear plastic strip running the length of the printer above the carriage rod) could be dirty causing the carriage to not read the proper end point and colliding with the printer.

This can be cleaned but usually isn't the case on such a new printer unless it has had a lot of printing.

One small thing to check is to make sure that the printer is plugged into a wall outlet and not a stip to eliminate a power issue which can cause weird issues.

Feel free to contact us in future if you need any assistance.

Have a great day!

I tried switching the cord to a wall outlet.   The squeaking is still there.    😐

Is there a way to have the printer cycle with the cover open so I can actually see where the sound is coming from?

Thanks for trying.
