HP Smart Tank 7602 All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

As the title says, my brand new Smart Tank 7602 has a 8AF30001 error and none of the buttons work. All the solutions I've been able to find on similar support discussions either don't solve the problem or are impossible to try because they require me to use the buttons, which, as stated, don't work.

@BrokenEye, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding 8AF30001 Error on Smart Tank 7602 Printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

The 8AF30001 error on your HP Smart Tank 7602 printer can be frustrating, especially when the buttons do not respond. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow to resolve the issue:

Step 1: Power Reset

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  3. Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back in.
  5. Turn on the printer and check if the error persists.

Step 2: Check for Paper Jams

  1. Open the printer access doors and** carefully check** for any paper jams or obstructions.
  2. Remove any found paper or debris that may be causing the error.

Step 3: Firmware Update

If the above steps do not work, updating the printer’s firmware might help resolve this error:

  1. Connect the printer to your computer.
  2. Go to the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.
  3. Enter your printer model (Smart Tank 7602).
  4. Download and install the latest firmware update for your printer.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

There weren't any paper jams that I could see. However, I can't connect my computer to the network for Step 3 because the buttons still don't work.

@BrokenEye, Thanks for the update — I can understand how frustrating it must be to have a brand-new printer completely unresponsive, especially when all you want is to get it working smoothly.

Since the 8AF30001 error has frozen your printer’s buttons and you've confirmed there are no paper jams, and you're stuck at the firmware step, here’s what you can try next:

Hard Reset with a Twist

Unplug the printer from both the wall and the back of the unit.

Wait at least 2–3 minutes — give it time to fully drain any residual power.

While it's unplugged, press and hold the power button for 15 seconds. This helps clear any stuck internal signals.

Plug everything back in and turn it on.

USB Firmware Recovery (Bypass the Network)

Even though the buttons don’t respond, if the printer powers on, you might still be able to update the firmware via USB.

On your computer, go to HP’s Firmware Download Page and enter Smart Tank 7602.

Download the firmware recovery tool, and connect your printer directly to your PC via USB.

Follow the on-screen steps in the tool — it should detect the printer even if the screen or buttons are frozen.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Does it have to be a standard USB-to-standard USB? I've only got a USB to USB-C cable. Luckily my computer has a USB-C port, but I've got it plugged in and nothing's showing up when I run the utility.

@BrokenEye, welcome back — and thank you for the update!

You're right to ask — the Smart Tank 7602 typically uses a USB-A to USB-B cable (the squarish type that fits into the back of the printer), not USB-C. That might explain why the utility isn't detecting anything — it’s like trying to have a conversation on the wrong phone line.

If you have access to a USB-A to USB-B cable, I’d recommend trying that. They're commonly used for printers, and you might even find one lying around from an older device.

Once you’ve got the right cable, reconnect and rerun the firmware utility — fingers crossed, it should recognize the printer and help snap it out of that frozen state.

Let us know how it goes — we’re right here with you!

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Oh, I see, that little hexagonal port in the back is a kind of USB.  I never knew that. I thought you meant the standard USB in the front. For some reason it still isn't showing up, though. Should I start the reset process over from the beginning, since it's been a few days?

Never mind. Starting from the beginning doesn't seem to have changed anything.
