I have a new 7740 working in conjuction with Mac. When I try to print  PDF's on 11x17 paper the printer always auto-rotates and therefore incorrectly prints what I see on screen (eliminating a portion of my image).  I have tried to shut off 'auto-rotate' but this did not solve the issue.

It prints the smaller, letter-sized sheets, correctly.  All my other printers correctly print the PDF image.  I've also restarted, checked firmware, but nothing works.  Any suggestions?

@EI914,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

In order that I may provide you with an accurate solution, I will need a few more details.

  • When was the last time the printer was working fine?
  • Have you performed any troubleshooting steps before posting?

While you respond to that, I recommend you follow the below steps and check whether the issue is resolved.

Problems can occur when you print a PDF file. For example, a PDF file can contain damaged content such as images or fonts that Acrobat cannot process during printing. Printing a PDF file as an image bypasses that processing by sending the printer a simple image of the document instead. This process can cause images and fonts to look slightly rougher, especially at the edges. However, you can specify the resolution in dots per inch (dpi) to suit your needs.

1. Choose File > Print, and then click Advanced.

The location of the Advanced button depends on the version of Reader or Acrobat.

NOTE: If you don't see the Advanced button, click the Down Arrow (to the right of the Printer pop-up menu).

2. Select Print as Image.

The location of the Print as Image options depends on the version of Reader or Acrobat.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Thanks for your reply. No luck yet.  My HP 7740 printer is new so I have never faced this problem before.  Just to clarify - all my other printers print the PDF exactly as I see the image on screen (both when I open the PDF and when I see the previewed PDF in the print subscreen).  I have a Mac so don't see the 'advanced' button that you speak of. And again, all my other printers actually print the image as shown. In fact, when I print to the 7740 but on 8.5x11" paper the image prints properly.

So the problem remains; my HP7740 always rotates my PDF image so that half the image is off the paper.

Perhaps this is a driver issue with Macs?

It looks like you were interacting with @The_Fossette, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out.

Please use the steps available here and try printing the PDF file as an image. If the issue persists then it could be an issue with print driver settings or the printer driver installed on your Mac. Since you have already tried adjusting the print driver settings, its possible that the printer driver is causing the issue. Removing existing printer driver and adding a compatible driver should fix any corrupted or damaged printer driver. The steps below should help you to remove the existing printer driver and add a compatible driver:

Please ensure that the printer is up to date with its firmware and Mac is up to date with it's software. If you are unsure you may use the links below to update the printer and Mac software:

Update printer firmware

Update software on Mac

1.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

2.)

Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.

3.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button  at the bottom of the list.

4.) Click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.

5.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.

Select AirPrint from the Use menu

6.) Try to print.

Keep me posted!
