I have a hp 8600 printer.  I installed an off brand ink cartridge.  It would not print.  Removed and rep, aced with an hp.  Still won’t print.  Says system failure.  I’ve done all the simple steps.. turning off and on.  Do I need a new printer?

@Marilyn113, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Printer Failure on HP OfficeJet Pro 8600!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 printer is displaying a "system failure" error, especially after replacing non-HP cartridges with genuine HP cartridges, there are several steps you can take to address the issue:

Reset the Printer:

  • Keep the printer on and disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the power source.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet and then to the printer.

Use Genuine HP Ink Cartridges:

  • It’s important to use genuine HP ink cartridges, as non-HP cartridges can sometimes cause compatibility issues. Make sure you’ve removed all non-HP cartridges, and install only genuine HP cartridges.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Ensure that your printer firmware is up to date. This process may help in resolving errors caused by outdated software. Check for updates using the HP software installed on your computer or through the printer's settings if it’s connected to the internet.

Check for Jammed Paper and Other Obstructions:

  • Open all printer compartments to ensure there are no paper jams or obstructions. Sometimes, even small pieces of paper can cause significant issues.

Clean the Printhead:

  • From the printer touch-screen, access the settings and find the option to clean the printhead. This can resolve clogs which may cause print failures.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
