HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw

Then the message wants me to press ok for another paper tray.  If I press ok it prints only one page despite the size of the document, it will print only 1 page and starts 'cleaning'.

Hi @Ann280,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting an error message yellow triangle with exclamation point "unexpected paper size with your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw often arise from a mismatch between the paper size settings in the printer and the document settings on your computer or software. Here’s how to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Paper Tray Settings

Ensure the paper loaded in the tray matches the size and type settings configured on the printer.

  • On the printer control panel:
    1. Go to Setup > Paper Setup.
    2. Select the tray in use and verify the paper size and paper type settings.
    3. Adjust to match the actual paper loaded (e.g., Letter or A4, Plain Paper).

2. Align Printer and Software Paper Size Settings

Ensure that the paper size settings in the printer driver match the document settings in the application you're using.

  • On your computer:
    1. Open the document you're trying to print.
    2. Go to File > Print, and click on Printer Properties or Preferences.
    3. Confirm the paper size matches the printer settings (e.g., Letter or A4).
    4. Save your settings.

3. Disable "Clean Page" After Printing

The "cleaning" behavior is likely due to a setting that initiates a cleaning cycle after every print job.

  • On the printer control panel:
    1. Navigate to Setup > Service.
    2. Look for options like Cleaning Page or Auto Cleaning, and set it to Off or adjust the frequency.

4. Update Printer Firmware and Drivers Update the firmware on an HP printer

Outdated firmware or drivers can lead to compatibility issues.

  • Visit the HP Support Website and download the latest firmware and drivers for your MFP M283fdw.
  • Install the updates and restart the printer and your computer

5. Reset the Printer to Default Settings (If Needed)

If the issue persists, resetting the printer to factory defaults can resolve unexpected configuration conflicts.

  • To reset:
    1. Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
    2. Reconfigure the printer, ensuring the paper settings match the actual loaded paper.

6. Test with a Simple Document

Try printing a simple one-page document to see if the issue persists. This can help isolate the problem to specific software or settings.

If the Issue Persists

If none of the above resolves the issue:

  • Inspect the paper sensors for dust or obstructions.
  • Perform a full printer diagnostic test from Setup > Reports > Diagnostics Page.

Feel free to reach out if you need further assistance!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
