My printer prints random characters

Hello, 

I have been experiencing a strange issue with my printer. It is printing random characters, mostly some rectangles instead of letters. It prints fine if I convert a document to PDF and print from Acrobat.

Same thing happens if I try to print from Preview. 

I tried resetting drivers, printer system and the printer itself, no luck.

This is driving me crazy. 

I shall appreciate any help.

I got a temporary solution from another post:

"setting up the printer with Generic PostScript driver", but then other functions cannot be used.
