Hello I am currently trying to print a document on my HP envy 5000 series. The document is a stylized character sheet That uses negative lettering as it's heading. It looks just great on my computer, but the moment I go to print, the preview shows all of the negative space filled in black. It's a character sheet so it's meant to be printed, That's why it's leading me to assume it's a setting on my printer that is the problem. I'm on Windows 11 but I cannot seem to find any way to make this stop. If anyone here can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi @mamir5,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you are experiencing an issue where negative space (empty or blank areas) in your HP Envy 5000 series printer's output is being filled in with black ink, it could be due to several reasons. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help you resolve this problem:

  • Check Ink Levels: Ensure that your printer has sufficient ink levels in all the cartridges, especially the black ink cartridge. If any cartridge is low or empty, replace it with a new one.
  • Printer Settings: Verify your printer settings to ensure they are configured correctly. Make sure that you are not using any advanced settings that might cause this issue. Set the printer settings to default if you are unsure.
  • Print Quality Settings: Adjust the print quality settings in your printer software or on the printer's control panel. Sometimes, setting the print quality too high can cause issues like filling in negative spaces with black ink.
  • Driver Update: Ensure that you have the latest printer driver installed. Outdated or corrupt drivers can lead to printing problems. Visit the HP website and download the latest driver for your specific printer model.
  • Paper Type and Size: Ensure that you are using the correct paper type and size as specified in the printer's manual. Using the wrong paper can affect print quality.
  • Clean Print Heads: Use the printer's built-in cleaning function to clean the printhead. This can help remove any dried or clogged ink that may be causing print defects.
  • Alignment and Calibration: Perform a printhead alignment and calibration if your printer supports these functions. This can help ensure that the ink is applied correctly on the page.
  • Software Issues: Check for any software conflicts or issues on your computer that might be causing this problem. Try printing from a different computer or application to see if the issue persists.
  • Firmware Update: Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates can address printing issues.

By following these troubleshooting steps, you should be able to diagnose and resolve the issue of negative space being filled in with black ink in your HP Envy 5000 series printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
