HP LaserJet Pro 4001n Printer

I have an iMac running MacOS Ventura 13.6.7 connected via USB to my new HP LaserJet Pro 4001n. When I try to complete print PDF files, the printer starts and stops without printing, not giving an error message or showing any documents in the print queue.  I'm running the current version of Adobe Acrobat. If I print a single page, the printing works great. It will not print the document when I try to print the complete file.

I purchased this printer for my business and must print large PDF files.

Hi @Te201,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When encountering issues with printing large PDF files on your HP LaserJet Pro 4001n from a Mac running macOS Ventura, there are several potential causes and solutions you can explore:

1. Update Printer Drivers and Firmware

  • Check for Latest Drivers: Ensure you have the latest printer driver installed. Visit the HP Support page and download the latest drivers for the HP LaserJet Pro 4001n.
  • Update Firmware: Check if there's a firmware update available for your printer. Updating the firmware can resolve many issues.

2. Adjust PDF Print Settings

Print as Image:

  1. Open the PDF file in Adobe Acrobat.
  2. Go to File > Print.
  3. Click on the Advanced button.
  4. Check the box that says Print as Image.
  5. Click OK and then print the document.

Reduce File Size: Sometimes large PDF files have high-resolution images that can cause printing issues. Try reducing the file size:

  1. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat.
  2. Go to File > Save As Other > Reduced Size PDF.
  3. Save the file and then try printing it.

3. Check Printer Settings and Preferences

  • Change Paper Type: Ensure the paper type and size settings in the printer preferences match the actual paper loaded in the printer.
  • Disable Advanced Printing Features:
    1. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    2. Select your HP LaserJet Pro 4001n and click on Options & Supplies.
    3. Go to the Driver tab and uncheck Enable Advanced Printing Features.

4. Use a Different PDF Reader

  • Try using a different PDF reader to print the document. Apple's Preview app can be used as an alternative to Adobe Acrobat. Open the PDF in Preview and try printing it from there.

5. Test with Another Computer

  • If possible, try printing the same PDF file from a different computer. This can help determine if the issue is specific to your iMac or the printer.

6. Check USB Connection and Cable

  • Use a Different USB Port: Sometimes switching to a different USB port can resolve connection issues.
  • Try a Different USB Cable: A faulty USB cable can cause intermittent connection issues.

7. Reset Printing System

  1. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Right-click (or Ctrl+click) in the printer list and select Reset printing system.
  3. Confirm the reset and re-add your printer.

8. Check for Print Spooler Issues

  • Ensure that the print spooler is functioning correctly. Sometimes, clearing the print spooler can help resolve issues:
    1. Open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    2. Select your printer and click on the Open Print Queue button.
    3. If there are any stuck print jobs, delete them and try printing again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
