Officejet 5255
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Using Word with Office 365 on Windows 10, receive ""paper mismatch" error. Things I've done: In Word Mailings/Envelope/ "Envelope Options" I have selected Size 10 envelope.  In Word Mailings/Envelope/"Printing Options" I have selected "Face Down" icon with center/portrait style load (this is not the default for Word, but it matches the printer's paper load tray icon.  On the printer, I insert the envelope face down in center and move adjustable guides to lightly touch sides. (I have been doing this for years with countless models of HP printers, Cannon, etc - I get it). I then go to the printer screen and "Modify" the paper by scrolling to select #10 envelope (never - ever had to do this with other printers-but I'm doing it now)  My laptop and printer are communicating wireless and flawlessly for all applications including Word.  Why is this one anomaly occurring? You find a bug and I haven't updated? BTW, I have tried to update and it indicates I good.

Hi @Sully12358

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you with the  "Error when printing envelopes" issue.

Try the suggested steps below to resolve the issue -

Load envelopes into the input tray

How you load envelopes depends on where the paper input tray is on your printer, and what type of printer you have.

   CAUTION:

To avoid jams or damage to the printer, do not print envelopes with clasps, windows, shiny surfaces, or coated linings. If you are printing with a LaserJet or Laser printer, do not use envelopes with self-stick adhesives other synthetic materials that are susceptible to heat.

  • Inkjet printers with a front load tray: Front of envelope facing down and the flap to the left

Once loaded, slide in the paper width guides until they rest against the edges of the envelope.

Print a single envelope in Microsoft Word for Windows using the Mailings tools. Additionally, most Word versions include a searchable collection of templates for many envelope types and designs when you click File > New.

These steps use Word 2013 as an example. The steps and menus might be different or unavailable in other versions of Word.

  1. In Microsoft Word, click Mailings, then click Envelopes.

    NOTE:

To use advanced Mailings tools to print multiple envelopes and use the Mail Merge feature, go to Microsoft Office: Mail merge with envelopes (in English).

Select Envelopes in the Microsoft Word Mailings menu

  2. In the Envelopes and Labels window, type the address in the Delivery address field, then type in the return address in the Return address field.

  3. Click Preview.

    The Envelope Options window opens.

  4. Select the envelope size and change the font type and size, if necessary.

Select the envelope size and address font

  5. Click the Printing Options tab, select the feed method and the tray based on your printer type, then click OK.

  6. Click Print.

Try landscape than portrait and check if that works.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thank you for your reply. I do appreciate your time to make it. Please don't take this the wrong way - not meant to be passive aggressive, but I am frustrated. What you sent me was the template troubleshooter for loading envelopes. While I appreciate it, please know that I am an experienced user. I did all of that and more otherwise I wouldn't be writing you.  I have even tried different paper basis weight envelopes. I made sure to avoid the self stick tape ones. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer. For grins, I have loaded the paper in alternative directions and facings. (BTW your suggestion to attempt a landscape loading won't work on the OJ5255 - tray is not wide enough).  One of the options you didn't mention, but I will here, is that I selected the #10 envelope as a paper option on the printer set up screen itself. (I did that long into my troubleshooting before I contacted you). This is my first HP printer that ever had that option as most others communicate with MS Word Mailings/Letters option with a default to #10 envelopes.  I honestly think I got a "lemon". There is something physical in the hardware itself that is sensitive and triggering a paper mismatch. Maybe I need to take this back to Office Depot. I bought their warranty. What do you think? Will I be disappointed in their response to the extent that my future printers will be Epson bought from Staples?

What is the weight of the envelope you're using?

The printer supports HP envelopes: 20 to 24 lb

You can check the printer specifications here

Keep me posted!

Using 24#. A little less than 5 grams per 10.5 cm x 24.1 cm envelope. I'm in spec. I can use these enevlopes on my HP OJ4650 at home and just about on every HP printer I've owned over the past 15 years. This is just about the most common envelope here in the USA.
I honestly believe it is a hardware defect inside there. But appreciate your attentiveness to my complaint. I am planning to return it to Office Depot. Your printer that is, not the envelopes
