I installed a new HP 62xl tri-color ink cartridge and printer says it is very low ink, after printing about 8 5x7 photos.  I searched and found this forum and went through unplugging the power cord and then power from the outlet.  Waited and replugged.  I also clean the cartridge lightly with a purified microfiber cloth and cleaned the electrical part where the cartridge goes into the printer with a damp q-tip.

After all of that, it still is telling me low ink cartridge.  Should I return the cartridge and exchange for a new one?  I just bought it yesterday and all this happened last night and again tonight when trying to get it working.

Thanks for a quick response.

Hi @Swooze,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've already done a thorough job troubleshooting this issue. The "low ink" warning on a brand-new cartridge is unusual and may indicate a problem with the cartridge itself or with the printer's ability to recognize it.

Verify the Cartridge Compatibility

  • Confirm that the HP 62XL cartridge is the correct cartridge for your HP Envy 7640.
  • Double-check the packaging and ensure it's an authentic HP cartridge, as counterfeit cartridges can sometimes cause issues.

Perform a Cartridge Reset

  • Remove the cartridge from the printer.
  • Turn off the printer, unplug it, and wait for at least 5 minutes.
  • Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and reinstall the cartridge.

Inspect for Damage

  • Check the cartridge for any physical damage, such as scratches or dents on the contacts.
  • Ensure there is no tape left on the contacts or ink nozzles (if applicable).

Update Printer Firmware

  • Make sure your printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause recognition issues with new cartridges.
  • You can check for updates via the HP Support Assistant or the printer's control panel.

Print a Test Page

  • Print a diagnostic page or test page to see if the cartridge is working correctly, even if the low ink message persists.
  • On your printer's touchscreen, navigate to Settings > Tools > Print Quality Report.

Exchange the Cartridge

If the issue persists after all these steps:

  • Return the cartridge to the retailer where you purchased it, explaining the problem.
  • Request an exchange for a new cartridge.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your prompt reply.  I did all the processes you suggested.  Since there were no obvious issues, I exchanged the cartridge and hope that this one works.  It was an HP 62xl cartridge and for all the years we have had this printer, which I love, I have only encountered this one other time.  I will be using the new exchanged cartridge today and hopefully that will solve the problem; the other one was just not working properly.
