How to Disable HP Cartridge Protection of HP Officejet 8025e. Has anyone had any success?
I have gotten as far as getting into the admin part of my printer, but do not see any tab to disable this protection ??
I have also logged into setting on computer without finding anything to deactivate it.

Hi @ABba10,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Disabling HP Cartridge Protection on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8025e printer can be a bit tricky, as HP has implemented these protections to prevent the use of third-party cartridges. However, you can try the following steps to disable this feature.
Steps to Disable HP Cartridge Protection
Access the Printer's Control Panel:
- On your printer's display, navigate to the Settings menu.
- Select Printer Maintenance or Tools (this can vary based on the firmware version).
Locate Cartridge Protection Settings:
- Look for an option that says Cartridge Protection or HP Cartridge Protection.
- If you find this option, select it and choose Off or Disable.
Using the HP Smart App:
- Open the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device.
- Go to the Printer Settings section.
- Look for Manage Your Printers and select your printer.
- Search for Cartridge Protection settings and turn it off if available.
Check the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS):
- Open a web browser and enter the printer’s IP address (you can find this in the printer's network settings).
- Navigate to the Settings tab.
- Look for a section related to Security or Cartridge Protection and disable it.
Reset the Printer:
- Sometimes, a reset can help apply changes. Turn off the printer, unplug it for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
If You Can't Find the Setting:
- It's important to note that not all models or firmware versions will have the option to disable Cartridge Protection. If the setting is not available in any of the menus or apps, it may be due to firmware restrictions.
- Additionally, if you are using a non-HP cartridge, ensure that it is compatible with the printer to avoid further issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden
Thank you for your reply.
I have done all three things already to deactivate the cartridge projection. This option isn't available, neither on the printer, computer or using IP address.
It isn't HP+. At least not written on the printer. How may I know that? The only option I found was to turn off the instant ink.
What should I do?? This is so irritating
I have also tried to enable/disable OBBE from system (tapping return key 4 times).
I was a really happy and satisfied customer with my previous hp printer. This experience have made me think trice or more considering hp next time..
Hope you're all l able to solve this problem off mine.
Regards

The message I'm getting is that non hp chip is detected and the firmware is blocking it .. not that it's anything wrong with it ..
If the firmware is not giving me the option, it must be possible to update the firmware?

Hi @ABba10,
Thank you for your response,
Let's address your situation step-by-step, focusing on the possibility that your firmware is preventing the use of third-party cartridges.
HP+ Verification
First, let's ensure your printer isn't part of the HP+ program. HP+ models automatically enable cartridge protection, but it might not be clearly labeled. Here's how to check:
- Printer Label: HP+ printers often come with a logo or text indicating HP+ on the printer box or product information.
- Embedded Web Server (EWS): If you can access your printer’s EWS (via its IP address in a browser), check for any HP+ settings under the "Security" or "Cartridges" sections.
- Instant Ink Subscription: If your printer was automatically enrolled in an HP+ Instant Ink plan, it might force cartridge protection regardless of manual settings.
Firmware Update/Downgrade
If HP's firmware is actively blocking the third-party cartridges, updating or even rolling back the firmware might help.
To Update Firmware:
- Go to HP’s official support website, download the latest firmware update for your printer, and install it.
- Sometimes firmware updates introduce more relaxed cartridge restrictions or fixes.
To Roll Back Firmware:
- Check if your printer allows a firmware rollback. Some printers allow you to revert to an earlier version of the firmware that didn’t enforce strict cartridge protections. This can usually be done via the HP website or the HP Firmware Utility tool. If this option is greyed out or unavailable, it might mean HP has restricted firmware downgrades.
Non-HP Cartridge Use and Risks
Be aware that HP frequently updates firmware specifically to block third-party cartridges. If you want to continue using non-HP cartridges:
- Disable Automatic Updates: In your printer's settings (accessible through EWS or the HP Smart app), turn off automatic firmware updates to prevent future blockages.
Third-Party Workarounds
Some third-party cartridge manufacturers provide "chip bypass" solutions or alternative firmware that can bypass HP's protection. While these are not officially supported by HP, they can be a temporary solution if you're set on using non-HP cartridges.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
