HP Officejet Pro 8100

My Office Jet Pro 8100 has new cartridges in but it's asking for the setup cartridges I no longer have. Can you please send me the instructions to bypass this?

Hey there! @TEKDog

Did you check with the store where you purchased the printer from about the setup cartridges?

There is no way to bypass the setup cartridges error on this printer. You need the setup cartridges installed on the printer to print again.

SETUP ink cartridges are used only to set up a new HP printer or printhead and supply ink for the first series of your print jobs. They are specially designed to initialize a printer and calibrate ink levels. Unlike replacement ink cartridges, SETUP ink cartridges cannot be purchased from retailers and are available only in the box with a new printer or with some replacement printhead kits. When a SETUP ink cartridge is depleted, purchase and use a normal ink cartridge that matches your printer model to continue printing.

Please contact HP support and order the setup cartridges.

The printer was bought many years ago but wasn’t used. I no longer have the receipt nor do I know which store it was bought from.

I guess this printer is no good to anyone now. It seems a shame that it has to go to landfill as it is virtually new.

Hi! @TEKDog,

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

If you are unfamiliar with how the Community's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Community.

I have been contacted now by HP in Germany and have to start over again but this time in German.

I have a simple request.. please send me some setup cartridges or give me a procedure to get my printer working without the setup cartridges.

Failing to get this printer working will mean I will never buy an HP printer again. I will then also never have to buy the expensive HP printer ink cartridges. I have been an HP printer customer for 20+ years, problems like this tell me it is time to look at other alternatives.

Why couldn't you tell me this information here right from the start? I now know that HP products are not very good if you let your customers down like this. A pity really as I have used them for over 20 years. Obviously I have been too loyal a customer paying over the top for the expensive ink cartridges. Time to take my business elsewhere. When my Office Jet Pro 8620 finally kicks the bucket it will be adios HP. In the meantime I will change to the cheaper non-branded - but equally good for my purposes - ink cartridges.
