I have an HP Office Jet Pro 8600. When I turn it on, I get a Printer Failure message stating that “there is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off then on. If problem persists, contact HP.”
When I press the Question Mark, I get a General Printer Error message. I tried doing a reset, unplugging both ends of the power cord, etc. Didn't work.

I tried all of these steps with the exception of scheduling a product repair or replacement but they didn't help; my printer is about 10 years old and out of warrantee.
Here's the current behavior: it reports that one or another of my brand new ink cartridges are empty when they're actually brand new. Sometimes it says they're not HP - but I always use only HP ink cartridges. I swap out a cart, and a different one reports that it's empty. It's always random and erratic. I've tried taking them all out and replacing one by one - still erratic behavior. Makes me think it's electronic and not mechanical.
Any thoughts?

@Rich_Sanders
You might have to perform a semi-full reset on the printer to fix this issue.
The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.
I am sending you a private message with the steps to reset the printer. Please check the mailbox icon at the top-right corner of this screen.
I hope this helps resolve this issue completely.

I removed all of the print cartridges. Upon investigation I noticed that the little circuit board from one of the cartridges had fallen off. I used needle nose pliers to remove the circuit board, replaced the cartridges, and voila !!!
