My printer goes offline and the only way it is useable is to reboot. The printer is used as a wireless with IP address. Was not always acting this way, just began misbehaving a few months ago. Have tried the scan and print doctor and installed the latest software and drivers but no luck. Works fine after reboot until it times out from inactivity and then we start all over again. Any ideas?

Hi @jholtman

Was there any change to the Service provider or router prior to this?

Any chance that you can try using an Ethernet cable and see if the offline issue still occurs? (trying to isolate if it's wireless)

Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Support Community.

Can you try using a TCP/IP port?

Create a TCP IP port

1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, right click the printer and left click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video resource will show you how to do it:

Create & Use TCP IP port

Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port under the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)

Hope that helps!

The change of the port went well and printed fine, but the next day it will not print unless I reboot the printer. The printer shows "ready" both before and after the reboot. Do I need to completely remove the printer and software and start over? If I do that will that have any effect on my Instant Ink account?

Thanks for your help

That still had no effect. I removed the printer from devices and printers and uninstalled all software for the printer. Reinstalled the software and added the printer allowing the software to do all installations and connections. Verified that I could print and all was good. Next day same problem. Screen was dark and wireless light is lit. Get notice that printer is offline. Press power button to turn screen back on and still offline. Is the problem with the latest software and the auto off settings? I have looked at those and can only adjust the power save to a max of 8 hours. Could it be a problem with the printer itself? I have another printer of the same model but was cautious abut installing it as the current printer is signed up with instant ink

Used the ethernet cable and all is good. Printed yesterday fine and printed today fine without having to touch the power button. Obviously it was a wireless problem. I can get a cable long enough to get the printer out of the closet and back on the desk and forget about the wireless. It is still wireless from the computer and phone as it is using our cable company internet router.

Thanks for your help getting this squared away

Hi there!  This thread is a few months old, so not sure if you will still see this, but my 8610 is having the SAME problem. It is extremely irritating.  The reason I am replying to this thread is because of your mention of changing service providers or equipment.  My issues began after we switched our cable/internet provider and switched to their equipment. I have been searching for a fix, and your post is the FIRST I have found that mentions this connection.

My husband's computer is wired to the printer, and he has no issues.  When I try to print from my HP laptop, it always said the printer was offline.  When I look at the printer, it said it was connected.  I had to go into "wireless settings" and re-input the wi-fi password, and then I was able to print.  Now, about a month ago, that doesn't even work anymore.  I have to email myself anything I want to print, and then go on my husband's computer to print.  Last week, I tried ePrint, but it kept saying "printer validation failed".

Also, I have Instant Ink and get notifications that it can't connect to my printer, so they threaten to shut down my printer.  When I go on the Instant Ink site to check how many pages I've printed, I have to re-input my wi-fi password and then refresh the page to get the correct number of pages.

Very long story short, it is definitely a wi-fi issue, and it is definitely annoying.  Any help is appreciated!!!

Thanks!
