have an HP 9022 printer that has been working GREAT, but recently has become VERY slow to print.  When a print job is submitted (from either Windows, Mac or iPhone), the printer just whirs for about a minute and then finally prints the page(s).  The noise it makes is similar to the noise it makes when new cartridges are installed.

I have cycled power and removed/re-seated all of the print cartridges and cleaned the printhead -- all to no avail.  Test pages, when they finally print, look great!  I've checked for updated drivers and firmware, but don't see any.

Any ideas what I can do to get my printer back to working order?

Thank you, in advance, for any/all suggestions!

Is the printer left plugged into an active outlet at all times?  The issue you are describing sounds like what would happen if the printer were losing its power source (such as if turned off from an external switch).  This would cause the printer to go through an extensive startup routine, which uses ink and time.  I would suggest keeping the printer plugged into an active outlet and turned on at all times.  The printer goes into a very low power standby state when not being used.

Hi Bob,

The printer is plugged in 24 /7.

It starts to go through the print stage almost instantly , so is receiving a signal but just seems to keep cycling until 45 seconds then prints out.

Thanks

Is the printer left turned on 24/7?  How often do you print?  Even with the printer left on 24/7 I would expect a longer servicing startup if you print once a week or less frequently.

If you send a print job (and have the longer startup) and you send another print job a few minutes (or no more than an hour) later does the long startup repeat?

Hi, the printer takes 40 seconds to print every page, even when you are printing the same file.

If I print two pages the printer takes 40 seconds per page.

thank you.

I have heard that it may be a common problem with these printers, as Hp dont care they just send you off to the masses for support. I think its a shame, because it was a good printer before this. I used to click print and less than 5 seconds later it would be printing.

Sorry I have been unable to resolve your issue.  It does appear the printer is forcing a full cartridge service routine for each page.

I am requesting an HP Support agent step into this thread.

Hi @Granny1111

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I can imagine how disappointing it feels when a printer that used to respond in seconds now takes nearly a minute for each page. You’ve already done a thorough job reseating cartridges, cleaning the printhead, and checking drivers—thank you for those steps.

Let’s go through a few more checks that can help restore smooth printing:

Firmware update
Even if the printer shows no updates, it’s worth manually checking through the HP App or directly on the printer’s control panel. Firmware updates often address performance issues.
Guide: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/ish_1776648-1643972-16

Print driver settings on Windows

  • Open Devices and Printers → right-click your OfficeJet Pro 9022 → Printing Preferences.
  • Under the Advanced or Paper/Quality tab, ensure the print mode is not set to “Best” for everyday jobs. Try “Normal” or “Draft” to see if speed improves.
  • Disable “Print in Max DPI” if enabled.

Connection type

  • If you’re using wireless, try connecting via USB temporarily to see if speed improves. This helps isolate whether the delay is caused by communication rather than the printer itself.
  • If wireless is preferred, ensure the printer is connected to a 2.4 GHz band rather than 5 GHz, as some models respond faster on 2.4 GHz.

Servicing cycle behavior
The sound you describe is the servicing routine. If it repeats for every page, check whether “Collate” or “Separate jobs” is enabled in the print dialog. Sending multiple single-page jobs instead of one multi-page job can trigger repeated servicing.

Run Diagnose & Fix in HP App

  • Open the HP App on Windows.
  • Select your printer → Printer SettingsAdvanced SettingsDiagnose & Fix.
This tool automatically checks for stuck processes, driver conflicts, or communication delays.

Power cycle with reset

  • With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord from the rear.
  • Wait 60 seconds, reconnect directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Power on and test again.

For more detailed steps on improving print speed, you can refer to HP’s official video guide:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGsRXtlonb4

You’ve already shown great patience and care in maintaining your printer. Trying the above steps should help narrow down whether the delay is caused by settings, connection, or a servicing loop.
