OfficeJet 6600
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Attempted to print and received the following message on the printer: "Printer Failure: There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn the printer off, then on. If the problem persists, contact HP."

Went through the automated HP helper, got to the point where I downloaded the evaluation tool, then downloaded the subsequent software it recommended. Went thorugh the installation. Followed the steps to unplug the printer and it automatically came back on to reveal the exact same error message.

Tried to contact HP but the warranty couldn't be verified.

I also opened the printer ink access door, removed all of the cartridges and cleaned them, then tried to get the ink that was in the compartment where the cartridges sit cleaned out (only had moderate success with that) and put everything back in. Unplugged and reset the printer again. Still received the same error message.

Help!

Only ever used OEM HP cartridges, zero issues before this, and I just bought ink so I'd really like to not have to replace this machine.

Welcome to HP forums, I see that you are getting an ink system error and you have tried multiple troubleshooting steps.

Did you update the printer firmware?

If not, try the below steps.

  1. Make sure the printer is on and connected to the computer through your local network or USB cable.

  2. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads.

  3. If a Let's identify your product to get started page displays, click Printer.

  4. Type your printer model number, and then click Submit.

The software results page for your printer displays with the default operating system selected.

  5. If you need to change the version of Windows, click Change, select your version, and then click Change.

  6. Click Firmware, and then click Download.

If a Firmware section is not listed, an update is not currently available for your printer.

  7. Save the file to your computer.

  8. Locate and then open the file to start the installation process.

  9. When the HP Printer Update window opens, see if the printer serial number displays.

    • If the serial number displays, select the checkbox next to it, and then click Update.

    • If the serial number displays but the status is 'not applicable' (grayed out), you do not need the firmware update. Click Cancel.

    • If the serial number does not display and your printer uses a network connection, connect a USB cable to the printer and computer. Wait 20 seconds, and then click Refresh. When the serial number displays, select the checkbox next to it, and then click Update.

The HP Printer Update utility window showing a serial number selected for an HP OfficeJet 4650 and an activity bar showing that the update is in progress.

  10. When the update completes, click OK.

  11. If you connected a USB cable to update your network printer, remove the USB driver installed by Windows.

    1. Search Windows for control panel, and then click Control Panel in the results.

    2. Click View Devices and printers.

    3. Right-click the USB printer device that matches your printer model, and then select Remove Device.

    4. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer, and then restart the computer.

Unfortunately this didn’t work. The firmware was apparently updated previously. It looks as though, upon reopening the printer cartridge door, that one of my HP OEM cartridges leaked all over the holding area. I’m still getting the same error and I still can’t print. I’ve had to replace my HP printers several times over the last few years. I have several unused cartridges that total the cost of a new printer so if I can’t fix this in a few days I’m going to swell the cartridges and try an Epson or a brother or something else. Too many problems in too little time with as ginger as I treat my electronics...

None of the suggestions or recommendations have worked. I put the serial number in and the hp website can’t even tell me if I’m under warranty or eligible for a plan. All software and firmware, everything recommended has been updated. Tried to clean everything. Not happy with any of the results but I do appreciate an HP employee reaching out to try to help.

Hey Sandy,

Thank you for reaching out but nothing has worked. I think I’m going to have to recycle this one just like the last HP. It looks like my OEM cartridge leaked all over and I can’t clean it enough to get anything to work.

Unfortunately after buying expensive cartridges for this machine it might be time to look for a new manufacturer.

Thanks for trying,

Lisa

It looks like you were interacting with @sandytechy20, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out.

Since you tried all possible steps mentioned in this document to resolve the printer failure error. I'm afraid, its a possible printhead failure. You may call HP Support to obtain all available repair/replacement options. You can use the following steps to contact your regional HP Support:

1) Click on this link.

2) Select your product type below.

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Select the chat or get phone number options based on your preferences.

6) Fill the web-form and proceed further.

Hey Sandy,

I tried the HP doctor diagnosing program, I tried to clean everything out, I tried to download firmware and eventually reinstalled the entire software platform. It still doesn't give an actual error code and doesn't tell me there's anything wrong specific enough other than to unplug the unit and plug it back in. I've tried rebooting everything. When I opened the front cartridge door there's yellow ink all over the place. So I can only assume that with a stationary machine (hasn't been moved since it was put on the shelf where it still sits) that maybe the ink cartridge failed? I tried with soft cloths wrapped over q tips and whatnot to get all of the ink out thinking maybe that was the problem. It didn't work either. We've only ever used OEM HP cartridges and unfortunately I think this printer is a dead one...

I tried HP support once a few years ago and found out two things, if I was out of warranty people kept asking money to speak with support (not going to happen) and that often the repair and or replacement parts are more expensive than just popping on Amazon or out to Best Buy and picking up a new printer. I've always loved HP for my printer and PC needs but lately we have been making the switch to Apple and other printer manufacturers. Currently we have an Epson (after replacing this last HP) and have been pretty happy with it so far.

I appreciate you following up, but we're no longer comfortable putting money into HP.
