Hi all,

So I am trying to print photos on an OfficeJet Pro 7740. Yes, I know that's not its specialty. Anyway, for the life of me, this thing will not even pickup the photo paper. Using Tray 1. All settings correct. But it just won't pickup the paper. If I run plain paper through it, no problem. But as soon as I load photo paper and send it a job, it just doesn't pick the paper up and errors out (no code).  Specifically, I am trying:

HP Premium Plus Photo Paper

8.5x11

80lb

300 g/m2

Glossy

As far as I can tell from the specs at https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05204381 it should be compatible???  Am I wrong?

I'd appreciate any ideas before I just chuck this thing into the river.  Thanks!

Welcome to the HP Community --

In my opinion, the 300 gsm photo paper is too heavy for this printer.

The specifications:

Media TypesPlain; HP EcoFFICIENT; HP Premium Presentation Matte 120g; HP Tri-fold Brochure Glossy 180g; HP Brochure Matte 180g; HP Brochure Glossy 180g; HP Advanced Photo Papers; Light 60-74g

HP Advanced Photo Paper is 250 gsm.

Tray and Paper

Load the paper into the printer drawer that supports photo paper,

Shut the drawer > Evaluate the message on the printer control panel > Adjust / Set the Size and type.

EWS - Example

NOTES

  • EWS does not designate paper type by exact name -- for example, there is no entry for "Advanced Photo paper".  Use selection closest, for example, HP Photo Paper
  • EWS does designate paper weight - supported paper is determined by the specifications for the particular model

EWS > HP Document / How-to

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

NOTE:  Find printer IP address

Section Open the EWS over a local network orientation

EWS – Tray and Paper Management

Old Style EWS

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper (Management)

Select / Adjust settings for Paper Size / Type

Model and EWS version Dependent:  Advanced section

Click Apply to save changes

New Style EWS

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Paper > Trays > click on Tray to configure

And (in addition and as available)

Section Print > Default Print Options > Select default tray

Tray and Paper – Paper Size / Paper Type / Paper Weight

Paper Size, Type, and Weight loaded in the printer tray must be supported for use in that tray.

EWS (Embedded Web Server) provides access and control for Settings, including Tray and Paper.

Reminder

HP Smart Mobile might require that paper size / type is rechecked / adjusted before the content is opened for print.

Notes

Depending on the printer model, the Printer Control Panel touchscreen might provide access to Paper Size / Type settings immediately after the paper is (re)loaded into the appropriate printer intake tray.

New printer?  Touchscreen Printer Control Panel locked against making changes?  Try username "admin" and the PIN located on the sticker on the inside of the front door of the printer.

Trays

  • If the printer lacks a second tray, all paper / types are supported in the single available tray.
  • Printers that include a Photo Tray generally restrict the paper sizes and paper type supported in that tray.

Custom size?

If EWS does not allow setting the paper size or size “Custom”,

If the printer includes a touchscreen display printer control panel,

Look for the setting for “Custom” in the Printer Control Panel after (re)loading the paper to be used

NOTE:  Size Custom is not available for all printers

Hot **bleep**, that's all it was. The "Premium" 300 GSM paper was too much, I guess.  Bought some of the "Advanced" 250 and it works fine.

Thanks!

OMG, I lied!

It works if you load the photo paper upside down (which is, of course, useless).  Flip it right side up?  Jams.  Every time.  I quit.  POS.  Thanks, anyway.

You are welcome.

Printer should print on supported paper size, type, and weight.

What else?

If you've had the printer for awhile and / or it has not been cleaned recently,

and

assuming the paper is supported

and

The paper size and type are selected in both the printer (panel / ews) and the printer app / software

then...

Try cleaning the printer, including the rollers.

To those reading:

The following example is not fully relevant to HP Smart (Windows) when the printer supports Print Anywhere AND when

Private Pickup is switched ON.  Why?  Private Pickup limits settings / options.

General Example - HP Smart - Windows - Simple Photo Print - Sized Print on Letter Paper

Reminders

Paper Type = "HP Photo Paper" or similar

Photo Size = "Full Page"

In More Settings > If the paper type and size support it, optionally select Borderless (last in list)
