If I do not use the printer for a few days, the printer locks up. I can't print to it, I can't open HP Smart, the power button is lit but it does not do anything, regardless of how long you hold it, and the display screen is blacked out and unresponsive. The only way to reset it is to unplug and then replug and let it go through its boot up process. Why does the printer do this and how can I fix. I can't imagine I have to continuously unplug this thing every time I need to print.

Hi @Greg2309,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020e printer might be experiencing a firmware or hardware issue that causes it to freeze up after being idle for some time. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue.
- Update Firmware: Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, HP releases firmware updates to address bugs and improve performance.
- Power Cycle: If the printer freezes, instead of unplugging it from the power source, try turning it off using the power button (if it responds) and then turning it back on after a few minutes to see if it resets itself without needing to be unplugged.
- Reset to Factory Settings: There might be an option in the printer's settings menu to reset it to factory settings. This can sometimes resolve software-related issues.
- Check Power Saving Settings: The printer's power-saving settings may be causing it to become unresponsive after being idle for a while. Check the printer's settings menu or user manual to adjust these settings accordingly.
By following these steps, you should be able to determine the cause of the issue and hopefully resolve it without having to continuously unplug the printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
