Printer accepts print job, starts printing very slowly, then eventually stalls. The screen turns blue, the lights all start blinking, and the message B86D84B8 is displayed on the screen. If I hold down the power button for 10 seconds, the printer will reboot but then the same thing happens again with the next print job. It seems like small print jobs work OK (e.g., I printed a MS word document with the just the text "Test Print." That worked. But if I send a normal sized document, it chokes and brings up the blue screen as described above. This happens if I send the the print job from any device (Windows PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, etc.). The printer is running the latest firmware (it is set to automatically update). If, after I reboot the printer, I run a diagnostic check using HP Smart, no errors are found and a test print works fine. However, the next print job that I sent to the printer will break it again.

Hi @Matej1970,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error code B86D84B8 alongside the symptoms you've described, issues with larger print jobs stalling and displaying a blue screen on your HP printer, suggest potential firmware or hardware related issues.

Although you've updated the firmware and diagnostics haven't revealed errors, here are a few steps to consider for resolving this problem:

Power Reset the Printer:

  • Unplug the printer from the power source for at least 60 seconds and then plug it back in. This can help clear temporary memory glitches.

Clear Print Queues:

  • Ensure that all pending jobs in the printer's queue are cleared. Sometimes, stalled jobs can create issues with subsequent print tasks.

Reinstall or Update Drivers:

  • Sometimes, reinstalling or updating the printer drivers can resolve issues related to the printer's communication with the computer. Visit the official HP Support - Software and Driver Downloads to ensure you have the latest drivers.

Check Printer's Memory:

  • For issues with larger print jobs specifically, insufficient printer memory can be a problem. Verify if your printer needs additional memory to handle larger tasks.

Verify Connection:

  • Check that your printer is properly connected to the network or direct connection methods. Network issues can sometimes cause print jobs to fail or stall.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a blissful day 😇.

Hi Animatryx and thank you for the reply.

I unplugged the printer power cord for two minutes then plugged back in. I tried printing an average size print job (10-page, 2MB pdf) from my Mac Mini M4. The printer completely choked on it. After about 5 minutes of nothing happening, it spit out a page with two lines of text from the document, made a bunch of noises, then straight into the blue screen showing  B86D84B8 with all of the lights flashing.

I reset the printer again by unplugging it for a minute then plugging back in. I then tried printing the same pdf document from my iPhone using the HP Smart App. This time the results were slightly different. It still did mostly nothing for a few minutes, then it printed the first three lines of text from the document and spit out the rest of the page without further printing. This time no blue screen. The HP Smart App displayed a pop-up window that says "There was a problem during printing. Check the printer and try again."

I then tried printing the same document from my Windows 11 laptop. Literally nothing happened. The print queue on Windows eventually said that the printer had gone to sleep.

I then went back to the Mac Mini and tried printing a smaller pdf document (5-pages of mostly text, 400kB). The printer started printing right away but stalled about half way through the first page. It then started printing very, very slowly. It would print for a second, then nothing for a minute or so, then print for a second, then nothing for a minute or so, etc. It did this for 5 minutes or so, then completely stalled, spit out the rest of the page without finishing printing the first page. Then blue screen and flashing lights again. This time the message on the blue screen was different, it was B36D84BD.

I double checked the firmware. It is running the latest version.

I don't know how to check the printer memory as you suggest. Although, it does seem like this could be a memory related issue. Can you provide instructions regarding checking the memory?

I also don't know what to look for as it relates your suggestion to "check that your printer is properly connected to the network." I am able to access the printer from all of my devices and the printer is able to communicate with HP via the internet since it is able to talk with my Instant Ink account. So, it seems that the WiFi connection is working properly. Can you please provide instructions regarding how to confirm this?

Hi @Matej1970,

Thank you for your response

Check Printer Memory:

Clear the Print Queue: Make sure there are no stuck jobs in the queue (especially for large files).

Windows: Go to Devices and Printers, right-click on your printer, and select See what's printing. Cancel all jobs.

Mac: Go to Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and open the print queue to cancel any jobs.

Print Smaller Jobs: Try printing smaller documents to see if that avoids the issue (this will help confirm if memory is the problem).

Reinstall Printer Firmware:

Go to the HP Support page and search for your printer (OfficeJet Pro 8025).

Download and reinstall the latest firmware (even if it’s up to date).

Check Printer's Network Connection:

On the printer screen, go to Wi-Fi Settings and make sure it's connected to your network.

Print Network Configuration Page:

From the printer’s Setup menu, select Network and choose Print Network Configuration Page. This will tell you if the Wi-Fi connection is good.

Reinstall or Update Drivers:

Windows: Go to Devices and Printers, remove the printer, and reinstall it from HP Drivers page.

Mac: Go to Printers & Scanners, remove the printer, and add it back.

Factory Reset (Last Resort):

From the printer’s Setup menu, go to Printer Maintenance and select Restore Factory Defaults.

Reconnect your Wi-Fi afterward.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
