Hi,
printer getting stuck on boot with error B83C1984 every third boot or so (I switch it off automatically during the night with the built in function). No service manual or error list to be found. Can anybody link me to the service documentation?
Thanks,

Hi @drhex,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are getting the error code B83C1984 on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 typically indicates a firmware issue or a hardware fault. here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:
1. Perform a Power Reset
- Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cable from the wall outlet.
- Wait 5 minutes to discharge any residual power.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
2. Update the Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
Since the issue occurs intermittently, updating the firmware might help:
- Download the latest firmware from the HP Support Website.
- Install it via USB (if the printer gets stuck before completing a network-based update).
3. Perform a Semi-Full Reset
A semi-full reset can clear corrupted settings:
- Turn off the printer.
- Press and hold the back button (◄) and home button while turning it on.
- A Reset Menu should appear.
- Select Semi-Full Reset and confirm.
Caution: This will reset all settings, including Wi-Fi and custom preferences.
4. Check for Hardware Issues
If the error persists:
- Try booting without ink cartridges (to check if one is faulty).
- Disconnect any USB cables and boot in standalone mode.
- Inspect for paper jams or debris inside.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi,
thanks for coming back to me but this wasn't really helpful. It definitely is hardware as it happens at boot time every so often as per my original post. So no paper jam or similar. It also has the latest firmware.
As you seem to be HP can you please look up the error code and what it pertains to or share the service manual.
Thanks,
Florian
