HP OfficeJet Pro 9135e
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Recently purchased a "certified" refurbished HP OfficeJet 9135e.  Had a few hick-ups with install, but it did work properly . . . at first.  Literally, only the first day/use.  Every since then, I get the same error message from Windows (10):  printer is "offline" or "printer must be turned on..."  I assure you, the printer is on each time and (otherwise) seemingly functional and available.  The first attempt to fix the issue, the printer came alive on the third shot at Windows Printer Troubleshoot, and printed the one file in queue.  The printer has printed a couple of other files from the queue -- one on each of two separate system shut-downs/reboots & running Printer Troubleshooter again.

I have gone through ALL the suggested "fixes" with no success:  shut down the computer, printer, router, and unplugged them all;  removed & reinstalled printer;  checked wifi/network; run HP Smart app; run HP EasyStart app.; etc. . . . many times each.  I also paused VPN while downloading and installing files for this issue.

I'm beginning to wonder if the problem might be any of the following:

   1) since it is refurbished, perhaps this issue is why.  Perhaps the problem wasn't actually fixed.

   2) I selected "Notify" when updates are available.  Did not choose "automatic" install, for various reasons.

   3) I opted out of sharing voluntary data and I decline the automatic ink program.

Could either 1 or 2 above have anything to do with making life difficult for HP owners who don't walk the line?

There have also been a few other issues come up when going through the help/fixes online and in the HP apps.  One that comes to mind is that they kept referring to "click on the (wrench shaped tool icon) on the Maintenance window or "lower left corner of home screen", in order to continue with the process.  That tool has only been present (where they stated) once through several exercises.  I find that, in itself, very curious.  Another issue was when using the HP Smart app to re-install the printer, it says to go to the printer control panel and click "Resume setup" when prompted.  I never once saw or found "Resume setup", anywhere.

The so-called fixes for these issues have simply kept me going around in circles for days now.  I'm about ready for a Canon of one kind of another.

@dderg, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding OfficeJet Pro 9135 still "offline"/"turned off"

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

You've definitely put in a lot of effort already — so let's see how we can get this sorted out for good.

First off, even though the printer is refurbished, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the reason for this issue. HP certified refurbished products are tested to meet the same standards as new ones. Plus, there's usually a 90-day replacement period for refurbished products, so if it turns out to be a hardware issue, you have that safety net.

It sounds like you’ve already tried most of the key troubleshooting steps, but just to cover all bases, could you take a look at this official HP guide? It walks through solutions for when your printer shows as offline:
👉 HP printer is offline or unavailable | HP® Support

If you’ve already gone through all the steps there, let me know — we can dig deeper together. Also, the setup and icon inconsistencies you mentioned are unusual. It’s possible that the firmware might need an update, or there could be a network configuration issue that’s causing the setup options to misbehave.

We’ll figure this out — just keep me posted! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!

I have tried all those above listed "fixes", multiple times. To this day (May 4, 2025), the only way I can get this printer to print is to turn my computer off and back on! Of course, the print job has to already be left in the print que from previous attempt to print. I may now be past the 90 day period since purchase. I can't constantly try to come back here to "walk through" things already done, and I don't have time to keep trying to contact HP... which has evidently completely shut down customer service. I created a (service) case number back on March 12, 2025 and have not received any contact from HP. I do wish I had purchased another brand of printer! It appears that I have purchased a very espensive paper-weight.

@dderg, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you so much for posting your query! My colleague is currently out, but don't worry – I’ll be taking over and making sure we get this sorted for you.

Disable SNMP Status on the Printer Port (Windows-specific issue):

Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.

Right-click your OfficeJet 9135e, select Printer properties.

Go to the Ports tab, select the port used (usually "Standard TCP/IP Port").

Click Configure Port.

Uncheck "SNMP Status Enabled".

Click OK and close all windows.

Now try printing again without restarting the PC.

Assign a Static IP to the Printer:

Dynamic IPs can change on reboot and confuse the PC/printer communication.

On the printer screen: Go to Settings > Network Setup > Wi-Fi Settings > Advanced Settings > IP Settings.

Set Manual/Static IP, and choose an IP outside your router's DHCP range

Check Print Spooler Startup Settings:

Windows Spooler service might be misbehaving.

Press Windows + R, type services.msc.

Find Print Spooler, double-click it.

Set Startup type to Automatic.

If it's already running, click Stop, then Start.

Try printing again.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows only):

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

I truly hope these steps help get things back on track. If you have any questions or need any further clarification, just let me know – I’m happy to guide you through it and make sure everything works perfectly.

Take care, and I hope you have an amazing day ahead! 😊

Problem solved? 🎉 That’s fantastic! If you could mark this as the Accepted Solution, it would help others find their way here faster. And if you found this helpful, a simple ‘yes’ would mean a lot – it makes my day and gives this reply a little street cred! 🏅
