Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've owned the 5255 since September and obviously the included cartridges ran low. I bought an aftermarket 63XL cartridge for the black ink, but the printer gave me the OLDER CARTRIDGE error on the screen. I wrote to them, they provided some resetting steps (remove cartridges, unplug for 45 seconds, reinstall), but the error continued. They sent me a replacement cartridge, and the same issue continues. I then bought an Office Depot cartridge in a panic since my daughter has to print homeworks. Regardless of the cartridge installed, the test page yields no black ink. I reset the factory defaults and started anew. I printed the network status page, and the characters printed out!!! Black ink was visible!! I then attempted to print a document for her, but the pages came out blank. At 9:55pm, I drove to a nearby Kinkos to print her homework extremely pissed and fed up with HP.

I am going to attempt to return the printer to Office Depot, but I suspect that they won't accept it since it was bought in September of last year. What else can I do or try? While  the cartridge company is being nice and sending me replacement cartridges, they continue to fail and not print. So, is it this a printer issue or a cartridge issue or both?

Agghhhhhhh, this is aggravating.

@HijosdePu-15, Welcome to HP Support Community!

Are you able to make copies in black?

If yes, it could be an issue with the installed printer drivers on your PC. We can try complete uninstallation and reinstallation of the drivers.

1) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2) Select your HP Printer

3) Select Uninstall

4) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’

6) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.

7) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

😎 Click on the “Drivers” tab

9) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10) Select Ok

11) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12) Close Devices and Printers.

Once the uninstallation is complete, you can download and install the latest software from here.

Update the printer firmware.

HP regularly releases new printer firmware versions with product enhancements or issue fixes. Depending on your printer, apps on the printer control panel might also receive updates. Update firmware and apps on a regular basis to make sure you are getting the most out of your printer. Click here to download and update.

Aww Tej

How sweet of you to help. Thank you

Making copies does not work either. As soon as I press on the copy button, the OLDER CARTRIDGE message appears. THe link you mentioned obviously mentions using genuine HP cartridges which cost almost as much as the printer did. Fabulous and perhaps unethical.

At this point, I want to throw my printer in the pool, but that will make it difficult to return.

So, I will attempt to return it, and switch brands.

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

I received a private message stating that a firmware update is being worked on to address this issue. I believed it when I read it, but after more thought, I feel that it was sent just to apease me (shut me up). This problem of older cartridges has been going on for a long time, so why didn't HP release an update much earlier?

Sure, I was sent some HP cartridges, but what am I going to do when those run out of ink? The issue will continue, and I will certainly not enroll in the instank ink program.

HP - how about an honest answer??
