Yes, as you are able to print fine from Ubuntu, make standalone copies fine, and print fine from a few of the applications from MAC, this is a software issue. The printer hardware seems to be working fine.
If the printer is out of warranty, free support is not available. Due to the age of the printer, the support is limited.
Keep me posted for any other assistance.

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.
This looks like an application-specific issue as you are able to print from Ubuntu and other files from MAC. Let us try these steps:
Reset the printer
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.
Check for any software updates on MAC
Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.
Print a diagnostic page as mentioned in this document and check the result. You may refer to the other steps mentioned to resolve this issue.
Try making a standalone copy in black and check if that works.
For more info on resolving print quality issues, kindly refer to the support/troubleshooting documents available here.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

- Did you disconnect the power cable or the USB cable?
- Did you check for updates on your MAC?
- Did you try making a copy on the printer?
- Check and reconnect the USB cable. Try connecting it to a different slot on the MAC if the printer is not detected.
- Do you have an anti-virus program installed on the MAC?
Keep me posted.

If the printer is able to make copies fine, it means the hardware of the printer is working fine.
Uninstall the HP Printer Software
- Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, if necessary.
- Click Finder in the Dock.
- In the menu bar, click Go, click Applications, and then open the HP or Hewlett Packard folder.
- If HP Uninstaller is in the folder, double click it to uninstall the software, and then skip to the step to prepare the printer for the driver installation.
- If HP Uninstaller is not in the folder, continue to the next step.
- Click and drag the HP or Hewlett Packard folder to the Trash icon in the Dock.
- In the menu bar, click Go, click Go to Folder, type /Library/Printers, and then click Go.
- Click and drag the HP or Hewlett Packard folder to the Trash icon in the Dock.
- Right-click or Ctrl + click the Trash icon, and then select Empty Trash.
Restart the MAC and click here to download the printer driver.
Try printing.
Let me know how it goes.
