we received this printer from a friend of ours and we purchased brand new HP 5740 ink cartridges. when we installed them VERY carefully, the message that they are relaying is, i still to replace the cartridges. i can't get anywhere with out cartridges. it will not let me do anything. i have tried all the restart and cleaning tips i could find. not sure what the issue would be?

my Officejet is actually a 5745 and was curious what year were these made. the warranty on this one said it expired in august of 2016.  this printer looks brand new.

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you with the  "Cartridge error" issue. 

 

Try a power reset on the printer-

Reset the printer to recover from printer failures.

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  3. Wait 60 seconds.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer( HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet)

Try the suggested in the document-Error Indicates Faulty Ink Cartridge

 Also, try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

 

The printer was released in 2014.
