I recently helped a neighbor set up a new laptop with the latest version of Windows 10 (1809), and after installing the driver set for the Officejet 5740 e-series, his Officejet 5741 will not print. Print jobs are either sent to the queue and appear to have printed but do not, and attempting to print a test page from the printer's properties fails. I am able to reach the printer's embedded web server and direct it to print reports, but it appears to never receive print jobs. I've deleted and re-installed the printer 4 times, checked all network connections (working properly), ran both the Microsoft troubleshooter (can't find the problem) and the HP Print and Scan doctor (locks up after sending test page). His older laptop with Windows 10 version 1803 prints to the same printer successfully. I checked that the printer's firmware was the latest version (it is). Removing and re-installing all drivers/software, restarting the print spooler, and rebooting the laptop and the printer do not resolve the issue. It is apparently a driver incompatibility with this newest version of Windows 10. Can HP please provide an updated driver or suggest another solution?

I was able to bypass this problem by going into the printer properties from Settings/Devices/ Printers and Scanners/Manage and changing to the IPP driver in place of the 5740 driver. Didn't know this could be done until I started looking through all the tabs. It's more of a temporary fix, as the OEM driver needs to be fixed for a permanent solution.

We have exactly the same problem with our fleet of 5740e's... Could you please provide a bit more detail on how you changed to the IPP driver? But agree, that the OEM driver needs to be fixed for a permanent solution. Upgraded PC's work fine now, but fresh load to 1809 does not.

Sure - follow these steps:
1. Go into Settings/Devices/Printers and Scanners
2. Select your printer, then click Manage
3. Click Printer Properties
4. Click the Advanced tab, then click New Driver
5. Click Next on the Add a Driver dialog box
6. Click Microsoft, then click select the Microsoft IPP Driver
7. Click Next, then click Finish
8. The IPP driver should appear in the "Driver" field; click OK to complete
The illustration below shows my personal printer, not the one I discovered the problem with, but the procedure is the same.

Thank you very much. I contacted the folks at Evanyouritguy.com and they came up with a similar answer. Yours worked for us, but this also worked too:
a) Install the basic drivers for the printer/scanner from hp.com
b) Connect the printer/scanner as part of the install
c) Scanner works, Printer does not at this point
d) Create a TCP/IP Port (using the printer IP Address) with SNMP turned off (Devices > Printers & Scanners > Print Server Properties > Ports > Add Port)
e) Reassign the printer to the TCP/IP Port (Control Panel > View Devices and Printers > Click on Printer > Printer Properties)
Under General RENAME the printer to something like "HP Printer" to differentiate it from the Scanner
Under Ports > Select The TCP/IP Port > Apply
f) Note you will see three devices associated with this -- the Scanner, the new printer, and another printer with 'driver unavailable'.
You can now print and scan without difficulty.

Yes, that is another approach that I probably would have tried next, but the IPP driver seemed to work. So far, my customer hasn't contacted me about any further issues. I'll keep your solution handy in case something comes up. Let's hope HP comes up with a fix for their driver, though.
Happy Holidays!
