HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Just updated Officejet 6978 firmware at HP's suggestion, and I'm now receiving 'older generation cartridge' errors.

Would rolling back firmware fix it, and if so, how can I do that?

HP Support is no help since it's out of warranty, but they had no problem supplying the firmware that I think is causing the issue.

Apologies if this is a duplicate. I've tried searching other folks posts, but can't find an answer that works.

Thanks for help or suggestions

@LMKSTL

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand that you are getting cartridge error, I am glad to assist you.

Reset the printer

  • Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.
  • If your printer has a rechargeable battery, remove it.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.
  • NOTE:HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.
  • Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Clean the ink cartridge and printhead electrical contacts

  • Remove any debris or buildup from the contacts on the cartridges and in the carriage.
  • Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.
  • Remove the cartridge indicated in the error message from the carriage.
  • Wipe the copper-colored contact on the cartridge with a lint-free cloth.
  • Copper contact on the ink cartridge
  • Place the cartridge to the side with the contact facing upwards.
  • Wipe the contact inside the printhead with a lint-free cloth.
  • Electrical contact in the carriage
  • Reinsert the cartridge into its color-coded slot, and then press down on it until it snaps into place.
  • Repeat these steps for any other cartridges indicated in the error message.
  • Close the door or lid to the cartridge access area.

I've tried these fix suggestions, but with no change to my problem. I still get the 'Older Generation Cartridge' error and cannot print.

As a reminder, this all started immediately after I updated the Officejet 6978 firmware at HP's suggestion, when they indicated 'A Critical Firmware Update is available for your HP printer'. After the update I put in previously purchased HP cartridges, but un-opened and un-used, and at that point received the older generation error.  Everything was fine until then.

There is no reason older cartridges shouldn't work, except that HP knowingly decided they shouldn't.

From searching the support community, it appears a firmware downgrade used to be available, but HP has since pulled access to that.

Are you able to direct me to an option to rollback my firmware?

Thanks again for help or suggestions.

Any other suggestions or help?

I’ve been unable to print for several days now.
It seems a firmware rollback or factory reset are options that might work, but I need help understanding how to do either.
Thanks
