1) if I click on the desktop 8600 icon and try to setup the scan to network folder feature, it asks me for a password (which I never set up) and then the software proceeds to tell me the scan to network folder feature is not supported by this printer (it is!).

2) if I go to the embedded web server, I can set everything up.  (It works after patching my readynas)....

So, does anyone know why #1 fails and #2 works?    I even setup a password in the EWS and still get the same error when I do #1 above.

I realize you put this up months ago but I'm new to the forum.  I'm not sure we had exactly the same problem but it sounds similar enough and someone with a network folder issue might land here.

I tried several times to set up a network folder from the PC.  It always asked me for a password.  It was looking for a Windows password which I did not have on this machine.  I ended up leaving it blank and it was OK with that..  I also got an error message...something along the lines of 'not accessible' I think.  I played with the Windows share settings, deleted and recreated the shared folder and such.  Same error.  But there was a 'Finish' button on the same screen where I got the error.  I figured 'what the heck' and  clicked it.  It brought me through a series of screens where I entered much of the same info it had already asked for and then some.  Lo and behold, this worked.  Sorry I do not have exact steps.

The scan and fax to network folder function can be pretty complicated to setup.

A Windows username and password is required by the Scan to Network Folder Wizard if using Windows 7 or Windows Vista. If using XP, you don't need a Windows username and password for the Scan to Network Folder Wizard to successfully complete.

Also, in Windows XP, you will need to allow read and write sharing access to your shared network folder, and enable internet connection sharing.

In Windows 7 and Vista, you will need to navigate to the Windows Network and Sharing Center and make sure Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing, Public Folder Sharing (read and wirte access), and Password Protected Sharing are all turend on.

I found that I couldn't connect after turning on the Direct Printing feature. When I turned it off and retried to setup a network folder, it connected. I used the Wizard and it automatically put in a user name and I used a new password.

Confirmed. I have replicated the problem on my 8600 as well.

I turned it off and viola! The network path containing the computer name worked. I then put other settings back the way they were, then turned direct printing back on and network folder configuration test fails. When turned back off, test is successful.

It seems that turning off "Wireless Direct Printing" lets the printer resolve NetBIOS names, which is important for most users since they are likely to use DHCP.

To restate the problem: When "Wireless Direct Printing" is enabled, \\<ComputerName>\<SharedFolder> will not work, but \\<IPAddress>\<SharedFolder> will.

Essentially, there is a conflict between the "wireless direct printing" and the "scan to network folder" features of this device (HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911a)

This problem seems to be documented nowhere else on the internet and has officially wasted hours of my life. Thanks, HP!
