I'm trying to print and get all cartridge lights coming on in sequence from left to right.
Is this a print head fault? If so this is the second such fault I have experienced on an HP inkjet printer in as many weeks!
This printer - just like the other that has since been replaced - is less than 1 year old

Hi there:)
Welcome to the HP Community @LincolnIBC,
I saw your post about the cartridge lights showing on your Officejet 6230, and wanted to reach out with my suggestions. I would personally say to try a reset, and ensure the printer is plugged in directly to a wall outlet, power up the printer again and try printing.
If there are any error messages, let me know and I will check to see if there is more troubleshooting to try!
Reset:
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the unit.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the unit.
If the printer does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.

I just opened the box of my replacement Officejet Pro 6230 that I received last week as a result of my previous printer experinecing a known print head error issue. I plugged it in and added the ink cartridges and all I get are blinking ink cartridge lights.
When I tried to phone for support - 20 minutes later to find a phone number - I was not able to get through.
When I tried the on-line support I was told how this printer - less than 1 hour old - warranty expired last October of 2015.
Not happy that I have wasted this time. I think I am going to request 2 new printers to replace the 2 that I have here as even the new one seems to come with a print head error warning notice on the webpage - looks like HP has a lemon here that they need to fix.
For anyone looking for the HP number here is what I found - hope this saves you 20 minutes of your time..

Update - HP is telling me that my 2 day old printer - just fresh out of the box - is OUT OF WARRANTY! I had to point them to the Maine Consumer Protection webpage where it states how the product IS in warranty - for 4 years in the state of Maine.
HP reluctantly said they would take care of me and will be replacing the 2 printers that I have here with a completely different model since this model is a confirmed 'lemon'.
They promised to reach out to me Friday but my phonenever rang.
And today I get a notice of how they are going to charge me if I don't return the faulty printer - I already did - but now am thinking I should not have as they do not have my credit card to charge me.
Some HP printers are not reliable - their Officejet 6230 is absolutely in that category. Look to have HP replace this with a different model if you have an issue. They will be doing it for me.
