There was recently a paper jam where the printer failed to print on HP Photo paper. The paper was removed, completely intact, from the rear of the printer. The printer prints slowly and with increasingly loud grinding noises. I've downloaded the most recent software and installed the printer again, wirelessly.

Hello,

I'd guess its time to have the printer serviced.

I followed (again) steps 7 & 8 (printhead reset multiple times) and experienced the same delays and noises on printing. (I am familiar with the noises that HP printers make; I have used quite a lot of them. This one was relatively silent, until a week or so ago.)

I then proceeded to follow the advanced steps, which I did in order, whether or not I had done them before:

There were no jammed papers or bits of papers in any of the locations specified I examined them thoroughly with the aid of a flashlight. There were none in evidence anywhere in the 6 or 8 different venues I was instructed to service, from the Input Tray all the way to the Doc Feeder. The printer still feeds and prints single sheets infallibly and without difficulty, so there are no "roller" issues. The printhead can be moved from extreme right to left manually, easily althought, at either extreme, it's hard to dislodge it because there's little purchase available for a good grip.

The only problem is that there is a significant mechanical grinding noise while the printer is slowly cranking out a print job. The noise is getting worse and the printer was not at all slow, before the noise appeared.

I wish I could have reported success, but there it is.

Unless you have any further suggestions, I think the printer probably needs HP servicing. The printer is still under warranty (Indeed, it's less than 2 months old). The warranty service level appears to include Advance Product Exchange and Pickup by HP. What do I need to do to arrange on site service or an Advance Product Exchange?

I was able to contact HP Chat Support, Austin and he says it is a hardware problem and I need to contact Amazon about returning the printer and getting a new 8720 printer

I did try all your recommendations before I chatted to chat support and it still did not resolve the grinding noise.  Thanks for your reply.
