Hi. I was printing and replaced the black ink cartridge, then the yellow cartridge after notification they were out.

The printer then showed  X Printer Failure.

We tried Solution 1, which was to turn printer off and unplug power cord, then reverse. Still an error message.

Solution 2 was to contact HP with error code, but there is no error code. It just states there is a problem with either the printer or ink system. A General Printer Error.

The operating system is iMac Ventura 13.6.1

Hi @GrandmaS23,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When facing a "Printer Failure" message on your HP Officejet Pro 8600, especially after replacing ink cartridges, you can try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  • Wait for a few minutes (about 5 minutes).
  • Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Make sure your printer has the latest firmware installed. Visit the HP website, find your printer model, and download any available firmware updates.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Open the printer cover and check for any obstructions, paper jams, or foreign objects inside the printer. Clear any obstacles you find.

Inspect the Cartridge Installation:

  • Ensure that all cartridges are installed correctly and securely. Remove and reinsert the cartridges to make sure they are properly seated.

Clean Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the cartridges.
  • Clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridges and the printhead using a lint-free cloth.
  • Reinstall the cartridges.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Disconnect any USB cables.
  • Wait for at least 1-2 minutes.
  • Reconnect the power cable and turn on the printer.

Run Diagnostic Tools:

  • HP printers often come with built-in diagnostic tools. Check your printer's manual or navigate to the HP support website to find and run diagnostic tools specific to your model.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
