First of all, before I even run out of ink, my printer will flash telling me that either one of the cartridges needs replacing and will therefore not even continue to allow me to print until I replace the ink. I have now tried 3 brand new 97 cartridges and the light is still flashing. HELP!

A warm welcome to HP Forums! This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.
Power resetting the printer and cleaning the cartridge electrical contacts may resolve the issue. Please try these steps:
1) Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector
2) Remove all of your ink cartridges from the printer and close the door
3) Remove the power cord from the back of the printer (Do no press the power button)
4) Clean the electrical contacts, refer to solution 2 from this document.
5) Plug the power cord back into the printer
6) Wait for the printer to turn on completely, then install the ink cartridges.
Let me know how it goes!

I took my printer into a specialist and it was concluded that my printer had died. My computer was not even recognizing a color cartridge being inserted, it was telling me that the door of my printer was still open, the color ink cartridge light would flash and the computer was saying the black ink was empty. All of my cartridges were still good, e.g. still had plenty of ink in them. The technician tried the cartridges out on his printer and they all worked fine. I ended up buying a new printer, after all the 6980 was 10 years old. I only miss the number of pages the 96/97 cartridges could print out. The yield on newer printers are no longer this good. 😞 BTW, thanks for your suggestions.
