@SURIE12, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
If you're having printhead issues with your HP Smart Tank 5000 or 5100 series printer, follow these steps to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:
Check Ink Levels and Fill Ink Tanks
- Low Ink Levels: Ensure that all ink tanks are adequately filled with genuine HP ink. Low ink levels can cause poor print quality and affect the printhead’s performance.
Clean the Printhead
Automated Cleaning with HP Smart App: Use the HP Smart app to clean the printhead. This can resolve issues such as incorrect colors, streaks, or faded printouts.
- Load plain white paper into the input tray.
- Open the HP Smart app, navigate to the settings and management tools of your printer.
- Under Tools, select Print Quality Tools, then choose Clean Printhead.
Manual Cleaning from Control Panel
- Make sure the printer is powered on.
- Press and hold the Power button for more than 4 seconds, then press the Color Copy button two times.
Print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page
- Diagnostic Page: Press and hold the Information button for five seconds to enable support mode and print a diagnostic page.
- Review Test Patterns: Check for missing colors, fading, and white lines to determine if further steps are needed.
Replace the Printheads
- Purchase Genuine HP Printheads: Ensure you use genuine HP printheads to maintain print quality.
- Install New Printheads: Tour the printer, and ensure the carriage moves to the center and stops.
- Remove Old Printhead: Open the printhead cover by releasing the blue latch, then remove the faulty printhead and set the new printhead into its slot.

I have done everything it has told me to do and the message continues "printhead problem" I have taken the printhead out, cleaned it as instructed. I have unplugged and plugged back in. I have run the Diagnostic page . Nothing will print and the screen continues to blink. If I need a new printhead where do I purchase that?. I purchased the cartridge thinking is was one and the same after $33 I found out it is not! Help please. (Warranty has expired)
