HP PSC 2410 All in One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi - very frustrated, and hope that the Community can point me in the right direction!

I am working to re-set an HP PSC 2410 Photosmart All-in-One Printer.  It's been connected via USB port to a Windows 10 PC.  I've used the PC every couple of months but haven't used the printer for a few years.   I now want to do that.  It worked for a couple of one-page print jobs, but now is not useable.  After a number of efforts to re-set - USB cable in and out; power cord in-and-out, and connected to wall rather than surge protector, the behavior is as follows:

* Every time I turn it on, the printer makes a grinding sound for about 30 seconds before stopping.  It sounds as though it's coming from the area under the little display window.   There is no paper in the printer, so no paper jam.

* when the noise stops, the hour glass remains in the little display window, and the green "on" light to the lower left of that window continues to blink.  I cannot access any functionality.

* if I plug in the USB cable, Windows Control Panel/Devices and Printers recognizes the printer.   You can try to send a document to print but after some delay, Windows indicates that there was an error in printing the document.

*  When I hold down the "on" button for 30 seconds or so, the display window goes black.    If I let up the button, sometimes the printer restarts and sometimes goes totally dark.   If I continue to hold it down for awhile after that, the four buttons around the circler sometimes blink green (e.g. "copy," "scan")   But pressing any of them does nothing.

Oh, and I do own the product.   HP does not recognize the serial number on the printer for some reason, and won't let me just put in the model description.

As you can imagine, any help much appreciated!!!

Thank you!

Hi @DaddySchlich,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A grinding sound is heard when the printer is turned on or when it is printing. Blinking lights may accompany the noise. The problem can be caused by a carriage stall or a paper jam. To resolve this issue, follow the instructions below.

Solution:

  • Unplug the power cable from the back of the printer.
  • If the carriage moved to the center, or if the service station lowered, remove the cartridges. Check inside the printer for any broken parts.
  • If the carriage did not move to the center, try to manually slide the carriage to the center. If the carriage is locked either in the left or right position, proceed to step 5.
  • Close the top cover of the printer.
  • If the printer is a HP Deskjet 900 series printer, refer to the HP support document Removing the Cartridges if the Printer will not Turn On or the Carriage is Locked (bpd50074). This document will provide information for unlocking the carriage from the right side of the printer. If the issue is on another model of printer, proceed to step 6.
  • Remove the rear access door, or the automatic two-sided printing accessory, and check for any paper jams or paper obstructions. Remove any obstructions.
  • Check to make certain the carriage is on the right side of the printer. Rotate the rear paper guide rollers upwards five times, then downwards four times. If the rollers will not move, open the top cover and slide the carriage to the right (if it is not already there and if carriage can move). Try to roll the rollers again while pushing the clutch in. If the rollers do not move, continue on to the next step.
  • Replace the rear access door accessory, or the automatic two-sided printing accessory. Close the top cover.
  • Plug the power cable back in.
  • Turn the printer on, and replace the cartridges if possible. If the carriage moves, but there is still a grinding noise, there may be a paper feed issue. If the carriage will not move, then it is a carriage stall issue.
  • After installing the cartridge, if the printer has a solid power light, perform a self-test on the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel, Thanks so much for your detailed instructions.   Unfortunately, they did not resolve my issue.  I went through all the steps.   There appeared to be no issue with the cartridge movement.   While I did find a well-hidden paper jam when I manually rotated the rollers from the back, that did not resolve the issue.   At the end, ,I was plugging in the printer with no paper in the printer, with the rear access door off, and with the printer top open.  The printer made the normal noises, the printer cartridege moved from the right all the way to the left and then back again.   It also sounded as though the scanner/copier did a quick test.   Then after everything quieted down for a second or so, the printer started the repetitious grinding noise as though something was trying to pull paper.   But none of the parts were moving at all - the smooth rollers in back or the plaster gears that I could see on the left side.  Again, at about 30 seconds the sound stopped, and the hour glass remained on the display window.   I did not see any broken pieces.   Do you have a suggestion at this point?   I am not optimistic, but would appreciate any help you can provide.  Thanks so much!
