HP ENVY Inspire 7958e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Recently my HP Inspire 7958e stopped working and displays a "Paper Loaded Incorrectly" error for the photo paper tray. We've never used the photo paper try, there's no paper in it to be loaded Incorrectly... for a few weeks we were able to open the tray and close it for it to bypass the error, but now even that is not enough. I've tried taking the trays out and putting them back in, tried resetting the printer & checked for jams.. what am I missing? It won't allow me to print, scan or copy anything at this time.

Hi @JCarlin218,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like your HP Inspire 7958e printer is mistakenly detecting a problem with the photo paper tray even though it’s empty and unused. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue.

Check the Photo Paper Tray Sensor: Even if there's no paper, the printer may still be sensing something in the tray. Look closely at the photo paper tray and ensure that nothing is blocking the sensor, such as small bits of paper, dust, or debris.

Power Cycle: Unplug the printer from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in. This can help reset the internal electronics and clear any false error messages.

Update Printer Firmware: Sometimes, an outdated firmware can cause issues like this. Check for any available firmware updates on HP’s support page for your printer model and follow the instructions to update it.

Check for Internal Jams: Even though you’ve checked for paper jams, ensure there are no small pieces of paper or debris stuck in the printer, especially near the sensors that detect paper in the tray.

Try Bypassing the Tray Detection: If the photo tray isn't being used, check if the printer settings have an option to disable the photo tray detection. Some printers allow you to specify the tray configuration through the printer's settings menu.

Factory Reset: If the error persists, try performing a factory reset on the printer. This can sometimes resolve persistent issues by restoring the printer to its original settings:

  • To reset the printer, press and hold the Cancel and Wireless buttons (if your printer has these) for 10 seconds.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
