My approx 3 year old printer has begun giving me a paper tray error message saying that the tray is open
and a paper selection screen
The printer screen continuously flips between these two messages, accompanied by an annoying dinging sound. I've removed the tray & checked for any obstructions but found nothing. I also occasionally get a flashing blue screen with the error 001B5D09, which causes me to have to unplug/replug the printer.
I've done all the recommended steps (unplug/replus power cord, factory reset, made sure firmware was updated, run diagnostic scan on HP Smart) and nothing has made a difference.
Is this just a piece of junk now?

Hi @arteemus54 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e is experiencing persistent hardware or sensor issues, possibly related to the paper tray or internal components that detect the tray position. The flashing blue screen with error code "001B5D09" suggests that the issue might be more serious than just a software glitch.
Here are a few additional troubleshooting steps you can try before concluding that the printer is no longer functional:
1. Inspect the Paper Tray Sensors
- There are small sensors inside the printer that detect whether the paper tray is closed or open. These sensors might be blocked or malfunctioning.
- With the power off, use a flashlight to inspect the area around the paper tray slot, looking for any broken parts, paper fragments, or misaligned components that could affect the tray detection.
2. Re-seat the Paper Tray
- Sometimes the tray might not be seated properly even if it appears to be closed. Remove the tray and reinsert it carefully, ensuring it slides in perfectly flush without resistance. Listen for a click or subtle indication that it is securely closed.
3. Check Paper Guides
- Make sure the paper guides in the tray are aligned properly. If they are too tight or loose, they can trigger errors about paper tray alignment. Adjust them so that they lightly touch the paper without crumpling or leaving gaps.
4. Clean Tray Contacts
- There may be contacts (small metal or plastic pins) that the printer uses to detect the tray. Dust or grime on these contacts could trigger the error. Use a soft cloth or a cotton swab with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to gently clean these areas.
5. Blue Screen Error Troubleshooting
- The blue screen error "001B5D09" could indicate a firmware or hardware malfunction. Given that you've already updated the firmware and performed a factory reset, the issue may lie deeper in the printer's internals. However, you could try:
- Reinstalling the firmware: Sometimes the firmware update process may not apply correctly. You can try manually downloading and reinstalling the latest firmware from HP's support page.Update the firmware on an HP printer
- HP Support Utility: Run a full diagnostic using the HP Print and Scan Doctor to see if it flags any internal hardware issues. HP Print and Scan Doctor
6. Possible Hardware Defect
- If none of the above solutions work, the problem might be due to a hardware defect with the sensor that detects the paper tray or another internal component.

I hope this helps.
